I totally disagree with you. Freedom of expression is not freedom of insulting without reasons. Being crucified in Rome is a totally different case. In case you did not notice, while she was crucified there was a countdown on the back. those numbers represented the kids dead for AIDS in Africa. It is fucking strong ARTISTIC message that deserves powerful visuals. That is why she had no problem to go against the Vatican. That was a message worthy fighting for.
Again, the Holy Water performance did not have any strong message to back up that strong religious symbolism.
To show sensibility towards the laws and culture of the country in which you are performing  does not make you a boring bland corporate shill like you say....there was no substance to defend, but if she wanted to defend her "freedom of making fun of Christian religion" she would have not got the approval of the government to perform there...and all the Indonesian fans would have lost the opportunity to see her for the first time.
On top of that, Rome is under the Italian government which is not religion-based, so the Vatican had no power to prevent Madonna from performing in Rome.
The audience in Rome enjoyed a lot that performance. Meanwhile, the audience in Singapore would have got offended very easily.
You know, a real rebel knows when to be flexible in a fight ;)
p.s. the censorship of AL was the true mistake that Madonna made U_U

Which freedom are you talking about? Is it the freedom to offend the audience's culture ? Cuz people there really believe in religion and if you wanna sing that your vagina fluids taste like holy water while spanking a nun, then you must have a really good reason to do it!
It's like going to a Muslim country and performing sex acts on stage with the Islam symbol. It is disrespectful unless you are trying to express a strong positive message. For instance, Like a Prayer video was offensive for many people, but the use of Christian symbolism there is justified by the overall message.
Now, what is the performance of Holy Water all about? Where is the strong positive message? Let's face it: it's just for the sake of mocking religion. So, I'm glad that she respected the culture and the laws of the place that she was going to perform for the very first time since she had no real reason not to do so.
I'm not religious, but I don't support blasphemy...

that's totally fine, but why 6 only for the RH tour? Was that the toughest one for you?
If I have to pick up a sixth one then it would be Body Shop cuz it is such a good mood and she does a dope choreography on the wall-screen.  Also, Deeper and Deeper is really good, while I genuinely think that Candy Shop's choreography was very lazy for her standards. Where is the appeal of it? Is it the topless dancer, maybe?
Sticky and Sweet is my fav tour after the Blond Ambition. It's versions of Candy Shop and Music have high-energy choreography and are more entertaining compared to the RH tour. Btw, why don't you like She's Not Me? It's so fun the way she plays with the younger versions of herself, and the way she dances at the end is epic.

Like a Virgin, hands down. That albums sticks with the boy-toy imagine on its cover throughout all the music videos, performances, interviews etc. She was always wearing some lace tops, bleached hair, rosaries, crucifixes, skirts, bracelets and bustiers. She was so good sticking with it that everyone in the world tried to dress like her and that is how the cultural phenomenon known as Madonna wannabe started

House of the Rising Sun is a traditional folk song.  Devil Pray has clearly folk elements but it is mainly a techno pop song. At first listening it sounds totally different and the similarities are only in some parts of the song. The instrumental in Devil Pray is much more complex and it does not follow the same melody throughout the all song. For instance around 1:30 it becomes more techno and when she sings
Ooo, save my soul, ooo, save my soul
    Ooo, save my soul
    Devil's here to fool ya
It sounds totally different from the House of the Rising Sun. Moreover, the parts of the instrumental with the similarities sound more like an upgraded remix of the House of the Rising Sun. That is why I would suggest the adjective "slightly"  and save "very" for more similar songs like Born This Way and Express Yourself ( or Halo by Beyonce and Already Gone by Kelly Clarkson)

Lucifer's Angel got a reaction from Madame Madonna in What happened with Madonna's lead singles?
BIM is arguably the most fun song on the album and Madonna back to her best humor and rebellious attitude. The lyrics are not as good as in Devil Pray, but the chorus is super catchy and Nicki's verse snaps. The sound is the most experimental one since AL. The instrumental goes hard, especially at the end of the song. It is that kind of sound-adrenaline that makes you lose control on a dancefloor.
Just to clarify, LFL is a good song with a sophisticated instrumental, but lyrically it s not that catchy and it is not as good as BIM on the dancefloor. It would have worked out much better as an album track, giving the chance to Devil's Pray to shine. Just my two cents btw.

Lucifer's Angel got a reaction from valinecode in What happened with Madonna's lead singles?
It is a big mistery ngl.
American Life and DAD are great lead singles, but Hollywood is arguably THE worst track on the album and I'm still wandering why the hell she promoted it as single. Confession era was still ok with Hung Up and Sorry, but Get Together was a strong sign that she was starting to lose her touch. There was no need to release such a bad song with an even worse music video (arguably Get Together is THE worst music video in her career).
Hard Candy had few singles and that's a shame cuz it is honestly top5 Madonna's albums, but at least she avoid some mess track to become singles. 4minutes, Give it to me and Miles Away are amazing songs and they all deserved to be singles. For a moment it seemed everything was back to normal but then MDNA was the final proof that she did lost her touch. Gimme all your luvin' was more like a promo single for her Superbowl show rather than the lead of a new music era. It was like if the halftime show was more important than the album itself. Girl gone wild was ok but it lacked promo and then Turn Up The Radio destroyed any hope left: boring song with even more boring music video.  A huge disappointment aka Get Together. It was more like she wanted to tease the set-list for the MDNA tour and the era itself became just a big promo for the tour.
Finally RH was the biggest disappointment so far. Both LFL and Ghosttown are mediocre songs and among the less interesting ones in the album. A terrible, terrible choice! She promoted the shit out of LFL but it was too trash to became a hit.  Instead Bitch I'm Madonna is the best song on the album but it was chosen as the last single when the gp had no more hopes for that era left. If BIM was chosen as lead single things would have been very different. Imagine if she performed BIM not at the Tonight Show with Fallon but at the Grammys. She would have caught everyone attention and it would have charted a lot higher and it would have get radio support too. In the UK LFL was played on the old people's radio station, while BIM was a sure hit for young people radios if only had been the lead.
Hopefully she learned tho cuz RH was a big flop and a better singles choice could have made a difference.
