If you are talking about overrated amongst her most ardent fans...I do think the deeper thoughts of the album are not celebrated enough. What made the album popular with fans actually did nothing for me until I got pass that and really listened to it. I definitely do not think it is overrated. Madonna albums overall I think are underrated. Most out there just think of spinning on the dance floor or "striking a pose" but do people really listen to what is being said and how it is being said?

I like to choose the songs for these lists that do have the balance of everything I like in a song.

When I was younger I felt no need to make sure Madonna songs were hits. Name one hit song in her 38 that was mediocre. Seriously. If we had the mentality of the young music listener today Madonna and other star's numbers would be astronomical and we would have never heard of others. She has had great songs miss the top ten. Madonna was my favorite artist but if someone else came up with something I liked I bought it. I don't have a problem with people beating records but it seems music listeners are in it for a chosen person and not the music in which case all they have to do is release. It's not a big accomplishment. Just like in politics young people put people up on pedestals and they don't have to work for anything.

It's very weird how you can gain that much and the music just doesn't stand out. It's all about followings with little effort or inspiration to actually create a hit song. When are we going to get a new generation of artists? I've been hearing the same names for years now. What I would love to see is a break from the music industry and billboard to customers becoming patrons of artists. Please officially cover this song. Maybe she could do an in between studio albums album "like" I'm Breathless? She claims she would be bored sitting still performing but I cherish the moments she does this. I still think she should create an album of love songs, not all covers but I would like her to work this song in. A musical love story....

With all the criticism Madonna gets it seems to me she gave up two great roles based on her ethical beliefs. She doesn't play the game in her artistic choices and it has cost her. Do you know how many actresses or actors that are seen as "the girl next door" or "the talented genius" who would take a role they wanted no matter what got changed or whom got sacked? I mean today is not the day for me to be anything but angry at people who get away with things and are put on some kind of undeserving pedestal on top of that.

American Life has grown on me over the years. How clearly Madonna sees things to release that song when she did. She pays for her bravery though while others are often celebrated. The video is amazing and I was unhappy that she didn't seem to stand by it. She still made it and the song though so I give her credit. When I first heard the song I was put off by how harsh it sounded. Talk about bursting America's bubble. She was being brave here and I have come to really appreciate it now. American Pie to me is a song focused on nostalgia but the lyrics sound like someone singing prophetically as well. I know why he wrote the song but the lyrics are so interesting. I think what didn't work in Madonna's version was she seemed disconnected from the songwriters original intent of the song. I think her vibe was looking back at the time that song was released and her age at that time which is great and that is what I got from the video but the lines in the song are not talking about her reminiscing about her youth so there seems a disconnection. I think her intentions singing the song were different than Don McClean's were and the song lost it's punch a little. So if I think of Madonna looking back at that time nostalgically I enjoy Madonna's version and the video is great.
