Bobo got a reaction from momosfantasy in The First Remixes You Heard
I didn't always know about remixes. Like with anything else, it's something you discover along the way or someone introduces you to it.
The first time I ever heard a remix, it was of a Madonna song and it was in 1990. I would sometimes go over to my next door neighbour's house. She was 14 and I was 12, her and her big sister were always very kind to me, we'd play games and listen to music. That day I went over to hear The Immaculate Collection, they just got it on cassette.
I really wanted to hear Like A Prayer, it was my favourite song and I didn't have it at hone, and as it came on I was puzzled why it sounded so different. What does she say at the start, and why is the choir at the beginning? And those drums and that bassline! That's not the same song!
The girls explained it was called a "remix" and that was the first time I noticed how a song could be "remixed".
The next time I heard a remix was in 1993 when I noticed the Fever video sounded different to what I had on my cassette of the album. I wanted to hear more songs that were remixed like that and in my mind I thought every song must probably be remixed, including Oh Father and Live To Tell!
On the radio I heard Rain and that too sounded different from my cassette version. It was about a year later I started buying singles and Virgin Megastore still had tapes of Fever and Bad Girl, so I bought those.
Fever had a radio mix, and again it was different from the other two versions I'd heard. Bad Girl had the William Orbit Dub of Erotica and that was absolutely mind blowing!
Then I remembered back to 1990 when Justify My Love had come out and there was an MTV News report about Satanic versions of the song if you played them backwards. I tried to remember if they called them a remix or not. I managed to get the 12" singles for Like A Prayer and Justify, and though I tried to play them backwards and didn't hear any Satanic messages (much to my disappointment!), I was still thrilled to hear the 12" Club Version and The Beast Within Mix.
Those were my first experiences of remixes, and they were absolutely thrilling. I never did find those mixes of Oh Father and Live To Tell that I'd imagined, but I'll Remember, Bedtime Story, Frozen... right up until the end of the American Life era was when I was an avid listener of those reworked tracks, they really satisfied a hunger.
Watching The Girlie Show was also another way of experiencing remixes, albeit live ones. Erotica, Fever, Vogue, Express Yourself, Deeper and Deeper, Rain, Justify My Love, Holiday... They all sounded different compared to the album versions. Even The Beast Within was remixed!
I didn't realise it at the time, but back in 1991, every time MTV showed Like A Virgin from the Blond Ambition Tour, to promote In Bed With Madonna, that too I guess was a remix.
I also enjoyed the extended mixes and dubs of the 80s, but for me it was all about the 90s and the amazement of hearing all those Fever, Rescue Me, Erotica, Vogue and Deeper and Deeper mixes.
What were the first ones for you and how did you come by them?

@FrankTotally with you on this. Does any other artist have so many fanemies (fan/enemy)? It's all so.... I can't even verbalise it because I'd have to internalise it first.
Surely this can't be good for people's general mental health? I mean, coming here and going through pages makes me want to up the dose on my own meds!

I was trying to not say a thing, but seriously: some people in here are so fucking full of shit. That's what i feel lately. More and more naysayers and negative people and this will be an unbearable forum to read. Sorry but that's how i feel. Really sad.

Interesting look. Whilst Madonna could wear a beautiful gown to show off her curves and assets, I don't think she's so interested to be appreciated for her looks but is daring to buck the trend and be different. She doesn't care what you or I think, she'll wear, do, sing and say what she wants. If we had half the balls she has to live her life so fearlessly and not give a damn what others think or say, imagine what we'd accomplish too.

Looked it up yesterday, and doesn't appear so. She was invited to his tribute after his death but seems didnt go ahead for whatever reason.

Just something I've wondered about over the years. Did they ever have a chance to meet?
Although he didn't disclose his illness until the very end, it must have been known in the industry, I'm curious if she was ever aware. Did their paths ever cross?
Professionally, these two would have made amazing music and given fantastic performances together, I think.
I also always wondered if news of his death affected her whilst writing/recording In This Life, although I know this song was about Christopher Flyn, but by then she'd lost so many friends to Aids. Can't imagine it really.
Incidentlly, just read that his coffin had been carried into the chapel whilst Aretha Franklin played. And today she passed away.

There's messy editing on Unapologetic Bitch as well. But if I remember correctly, she said Diplo had lost quite a lot of the multitracks of her stuff so maybe that's why they couldn't even salvage proper edits.

Also here is a pic of Madonna in the recording studio with Jellybean from the March 1984 issue of Star Hits (so taken at least a month or so before). So possibly this was during the production for the Vision Quest songs, but may have also been for the single remixes he did for Lucky Star and Borderline or both.

Madonna shot Vision Quest Nov 22nd or 23rd 1983 in Spokane Washington. By that point Crazy for You, Gambler and Warning Signs were at least in rough form as she performed all three numbers in the film and stated in 1984 she wasn't sure which numbers were going to make it in.
The movie was originally due for release in the summer of 1984, so I assume that all production would have been completed long before that.
Like a Virgin started production March 5th 1984. It is possible she recorded Crazy For You and Gambler in their final forms during this period. Though it may have been done earlier. Since these were all Geffen Records productions and not WB.

Whilst, lyrically, I do love Heartbreak City, VVV, Ghosttown, WAOM, RH, HT and many others on this album, production-wish I would have preferred a more Patrick Leonard approach to the songs in the final versions.
My favourite songs from the sessions weren't actually on the album.
Never Let You Go because of the lyrics, vocals and production, even for a demo. It's just sweet and sad at the same time. A portion of the lyrics reminds me of Dancing With Myself by Schiller (whom I always wished she worked with).
Tragic Girl, to me, is sublime in its lyrical content and delivery, a vulnerable quality I hadn't heard since the TPOG demo.
