It's been highly reported that she was supposed to perform but backed out due to recording commitments. Her manager Carese at the time issued a statement that she just wouldn't have enough time to put together a performance that would be up to the standards of the Superbowl.  I'm actually glad she didn't perform it because her version of "American Pie" really got a lot of mixed reception and I'd think she would have gotten ridiculed for it.  And these years later, we now know she really never wanted to record the song.  Rupert Everrett talked her into it.  I don't think she was really that happy with it either.  Though, I will say she sounds wonderful singing her version of it.  But I can understand why she brushes that song off now. It's really not her cup of tea.

Why got mixed reception?

Honestly speaking, her Super Bowl performance in 2012 was so amazing and literally close to the perfection... I ABSOLUTELY don't MIND she has never done this or that song previously.  Gosh, it was so amazing it even made me like GMAYL for a moment... Very short moment, but still! It was like.. Imagine having BDay song from MDNA album as your the absolutely most favorite Madonna song for a moment (I know pretty unimaginable, but it happened.. For like 3 seconds to me with GMAYL after her 201

True, she was already in "f**k the past" mode even before the album was released (when talking to MTV's Kurt Loder she was very clear about it), but when the album exploded and got universal acclaim, she felt even more vindicated to not look back at all. Warner wanted to do a greatest hits compilation in 1999 but she managed to block that and only do a video version ("93:99") while promising them another whole studio album for the next 12 months (what ended up being "Music"). Also, she could hav

True!!! Got the vibes and I love it tbh! Probably her last single that I actually remember hearing on radios!

Radio (at least in the U.S.) had already bailed on her by the time of this release. The fact they played it for a week leading up to the Superbowl and dropped it, is pure ridiculous.  It's a really catchy fun song in vein to some other past classics.  (NOTE: I am not saying it's as great as her classics, just saying it has the same vibe).  If radio kept playing it, it could have been a more genuine hit.  They just didn't have interest and her team obviously shelled out the money to get it played then, but this is when a proper record company would have pushed it to be played beyond Superbowl.  Warner most definitely would have pushed it in this case.

I feel the same really happened with Bitch, I'm Madonna. She just didn't have a record company that was going to push any releases.  And let's face it, that's how our corporate radio stations are run by now. It's all about the money.  If they don't get paid, they ain't playing anyone.

It was a beloved American classic.  In most case, those who hated it, probably hated anything Madonna did, but there were many who felt her version was awful especially since it was a shorter version to the classic song.  But who are we kidding, no top 40 radio station then or today would play a song that was seven minutes long.  People are very protective to such classic songs.  And I think Madonna knew that before she even recorded it herself.  That is why she was hesitant herself in recording it.  Rupert convinced her to do it for the film and she gave in.

Her version of America Pie was a sucess all over the world though. And her look on the video was classic Madonna

This is pretty true.  Other than the U.S., it went top 10 in most countries.  The song didn't have a single in the U.S, so that hurt the song.  I'm actually shocked it got to top 20 in the Mainstream/top 40 charts because I don't recall any radio station ever playing that song on the radio.  Though, I'm sure some of the bigger stations in the U.S. spun it enough the week it hit top 20.

Songs like Into The Groove (while a big hit still), Beautiful Stranger and American Pie would have all done far better in the U.S. if they all had proper single releases.

Actually her rendition of it seemed sort of ahead of its time.  I like the song better today than in 2000.

It was a daring move to cover such a classic song in such a way. A lot of people were critical back then but I agree, it’s aged well.

Shes ignored it so much that sometimes it feels like it doesn’t exist.

No.

You started to talk about US charts after my answer, not before :)

I was responding to the OP saying “it would have shot to #1 if she performed at the Super Bowl” which was clearly talking about the US where it didn’t chart very high. The whole thread is about the US and the Super Bowl. It went to #1 or close to it practically everywhere else… I was talking about the US, you just didn’t get the memo.

Yeah, it was released everywhere but the U.S.  It's amazing how successful it was compared to the U.S., the very subject of the song. My bet if the U.S. got a single release it would have done better than #29 on the Top 40 chart.  Radio was the major player here, but that was short lived in the U.S.

What are you talking about?  "Every post that doesn't disagree with" you?  Where? When?  Show me ALL the examples!  I may have reacted to someone you might have had a disagreement with, but trust me it has NEVER been about you!  You are purely projecting, paranoid and delusional.  Please leave me out of your drama.  Quite rich coming from someone who wished  "death" on myself and another member. :salty:

They were trying to sell the soundtrack of those films if a recall

You're right. That was the explanation why the U.S. didn't get single releases.  I get that concept, but I really do think BS and ITG definitely would have been top 5 on their own if not #1.  In fact, I'm sure ITG would have been #1 for her.

I never wished death on you, you misconstrued what I said. You have some beef against me which you have openly admitted. I don’t even know what it’s about or where it started. But if you don’t want to be involved perhaps don’t like or react to posts that are quoting me as it comes across as a continuation of that drama, which you started.

Imagine how many *US #1’s and top 10’s she’d have if streaming existed in the 80’s and 90’s. Probably 30 #1’s and hundreds of top 10’s.

He's also gatekeeping every thread too. How does one use the ignore function. It's too many andonna posts

You don’t know to use the ignore function yet? I have entire pages of threads that just come up empty

Click the hamburger in the top right corner and the ‘ignore list’ is at the very bottom. You just type in the name and whoever you want gone is gone.

I don't think she really did have a lot of choice in the ITG and Beautiful Stranger strategy. I believe that was all due to the record labels choices. And at the end of the day, it's about selling more albums, but in ITG case, the song never appeared on a released soundtrack.

You did! You wished both @Vogueristaand I to DROWN.  Nothing was "misconstrued".  You even admitted you took it too far and had the post removed, yet Voguerista's post quoting you still exists.

Anyway, just leave me alone. You know I am ignoring you, but you keep quoting me, reacting to my posts and making shady comments about me at any chance you can in hopes I will respond.  So stop trying to act innocent here.  Other members have called you out for the same shit.  I request we move on. No need to respond!  Just stop!   Any other response will be ignored and just proof you're just trying to drag in more drama!  I want no part in it.  Please and thank you!  Peace! :)

Thats not what happened. I apologized to Voguerista because I didn’t mean it literally and it was a joke not meant to offend them. The post was removed by mods because you were throwing a hissy fit about it. I doubt you were offended, just seizing an opportunity to try and attack one of your (imagined) enemies.

No one of any integrity has “called me out” about anything. Only a few MAGA trolls and now you. No surprise you are keeping tabs on me here though.

You keep saying you don’t want drama but keep inserting yourself in it all over the forum, whether directly or passive aggressively. If you don’t want drama try avoiding it. I will ignore you from now but if I see a reaction from you to someone quoting me I will definitely call you out. So stick to your  claim of “avoiding drama” please. Peace! :)
