Material Girl is a product of its time.1980s were all about yuppie culture, consumerism, ambition, greed.. Madonna was very much part of that movement. There was no sarcasm or hidden meaning in pop back then. Material Girl is a perfect anthem for the 80s. I love both the song and the video. Mary Lambert very wisely showed a more human side of Madonna in the end. She's a good girl after all!

i think Madonna has lost some interest due to lack of commercial success of her music. Moreover, she has never been keen to promoting her back catalogue of hits. Her brand is all about being current and relevant.

i became full blown Madonna fan with Express Yourself single/video release. i wasn't too crazy about the title track, though. Like a Prayer was so different from Madonna's dance pop hits and all the controversy was a bit overwhelming. I do love LAP now of course. Like a Prayer is her best album in my opinion.

i was 17 when Erotica was released. i expected bops like Vogue, so must admit at first i was disappointed. But the album grew on me as i got older and now Erotica is my favorite Madonna album. It's not her best album, though imo. The Erotica era was tough for a fan. There was the media backlash, but also my friends completely ignored Madonna, nobody even mentioned her. It was so weird.

i think Cold Heart remix w/Dua Lipa is a total bop so if M did something similar i would not mind at all

imo M reached superstar status in 1990. She'd had years of incredible success, hits, looks, videos.. by 1990 it was clear that she was more than a pop star and she wasn't going anywhere
