Vogue Italia got a reaction from Daxkoba in Why does she hate Jellybean so much?
Madonna's relationship with Basquiat was not the same as her relationship with Michael Jackson (which was an obvious PR move) or Tupac (a fling while they were recording). I know Michael wasn't fond of Madonna but Tupac actually said she was a good friend which is why he apologized to her in the prison letter that was auctioned off a few years ago.
Basquiat's art dealer Larry Gagosian said he actually loved her and he was depressed after she left him for Jellybean. I believe her when she said she also loved him, but I also think she does like the street cred by being associated with him and Tupac because it adds to her mythology.  However, she had been a public supporter of Basquiat since before he even died. In 1985, she told Interview magazine that she was a fan of his work. She also co-sponsored the first retrospective of his work at the Whitney in 1992 and she sponsored another one of his exhibitions at the Serpentine Gallery in 1996. This was all before his revival in pop culture so she clearly has genuine sentimental feelings about him.
I made a thread about Madonna's connection to the visual arts and there is more detail about their relationship: Madonna Immortalized in Art
If Basquiat hated her guts he would not have attended her album release party a year after their breakup in 1984.

He also wouldn't have attended her Virgin Tour concert. According to Warhol's diaries, Basquiat went backstage to see Madonna at Radio City Music Hall and they arrived at the afterparty together. I'm sure if Madonna wanted him back he would have obliged since other girlfriends of his said when they left he wanted them back too.

The pre-fame days and the first two albums have the most material for an amazing movie with fully developed characters and storyline focusing both on the music and the personal life. The rest of the career will be a bit tricky to translate to film because it can fall into the trap of being very one dimensional with Madonna scoring success after success all alone against the world. The early days are material for an amazing movie. The rest is essentially a misunderstood genius scoring hit after hit.

Not everyone was a fan of hers but Madonna had some supporters in the downtown club scene, Basquiat being one of them. He was excited about her impending fame before her debut album was even released. He introduced her to Andy Warhol and his art dealers. Larry Gagosian said he told her Madonna was going to be huge. Diego Cortez, co-founder of the Mudd Club, curated the post-punk art show New York/New Wave at MoMA PS1, which catapulted Basquiat to fame in 1981. He said Basquiat introduced him to Madonna and asked to help with her career. She asked him to be her manager but he declined to focus on being an art curator. Keep in mind Madonna left Basquiat, he did not leave her. Naturally, he was upset when she broke up with him but there is no indication that he hated her especially if he was still hanging out with her after their relationship ended. Keith Haring was another supporter, Martin Burgoyne, Maripol, Debi Mazar, Erika Belle, Jellybean.

Well, now we know what she doing at that warehouse, filming another Frozen Remix video. I always like to see new content from her and she looks good in the clip but she sure is milking this trend. I get that it's boosting her streaming numbers but like can we get the cast announced for the film? It's almost April and we don't even know who will be starring as Madonna yet!

But she's okay with talking about Basquiat and they had a bad breakup nearly 40 years ago, although they were later on friendly terms. I know she had a bad breakup with Jellybean but until this appearance, I didn't know she felt this way about him. Maybe she was just joking but she didn't seem like it. Sean Penn probably out her through worse and she has forgiven him.
I wouldn't be surprised if Madonna minimizes her relationship with Jellybean in the film. I noticed in the 2 years she has been writing the script she hasn't mentioned him. She doesn't seem to give him much credit. She gives Dan Gilroy credit for teaching her how to play the guitar. I even saw a picture of her occasional lover Ken Compton (from the Burning Up video) on her moodboard but not a single picture of Jellybean.
Jellybean produced her first hit song. He knows she used him but he benefited from her success as well. If she truly is still resentful towards him I'm sure it's for a very personal reason. It'll be interesting to see how Madonna will portray her dynamics with DJs and producers early in her career in the film. Her ambition and talent is the reason for her successful long career, but she was known to sleep around to get her music played.

I just came across a video on Youtube and during the very first seconds you can see a very short snippet from what looks like a video of her shooting with Scavullo in 1983. I guess there is more, maybe the whole shoot has been filmed. I had no clue some of her early photoshoots could have been filmed. Imagine if one day we get go see videos of her 80's photoshoots like the Like a Virgin album cover sessions or the Trube Blue one... It's incredible all the stuff that do exist and that we have no clue about...

I wish M would not 'alter' her appearance on social media to the extent that she does. It plays into the misogyny and wider stereotypical views of women and age. One significant consequence of this is the gaping discrepancy between this 'false' image and her 'real' appearance. This gives oxygen to articles such as the recent DM one (although they have never needed an excuse for this). The narrative will now constantly be about "this is her REAL face!". Yes, this is societies problem ("don't hang your shit on me...") and people should know better. But M should also know that this is what will happen - and by feeding into this culture she is also helping to perpetuate it, for ill or good.

As this forum is shutting down, I will take the opportunity to express a few personal truths. I have loved Madonna since her rise to prominence. She has been an incredible role model and educator. She is a fascinating person who has marched to the beat of her own drum with courage and conviction. The richness and success of her discography puts most popular artists to shame! She has produced some of the most exquisitely conceived stage performances in history, and she has been able to remain the center of attention for good and for bad throughout her long and illustrious career.

I am also able to accept that Madonna’s imperialism has long ended, and her exceptional achievements have for the most part become minor sound bytes in a world consumed by constant change and newness. Her public profile has evolved considerably in recent years due to her adopting social media as her primary content source. Her IG content has often been viewed as awkward and tone deaf, but she is clearly content to convey to the world that she lives a very unique life that most people cannot relate to, and she doesn’t seem to care much what anyone thinks of her (except for certain rappers). I respect these choices and continue to see the same bravery and audacity in her that I’ve always seen.

However, this doesn’t mean that I find her modern aesthetic choices pleasant. That you disagree also doesn’t mean that I, or any other critic, should refrain from expressing an opinion that doesn’t placate her fans who are sensitive to her being criticized or objectified.

Here’s where it becomes dangerous to express what I experience as the truth because there’s an awful lot of SJW virtue signaling that has become rampant on here, which is unsurprisingly completely in line with the general behavioral fascism society seems intent on imposing. Any narrative that contradicts the prescribed acceptable sycophancy is considered offensive. Well hold onto your hats because I am going to express my truth and risk it all! ?
That Madonna has had cosmetic enhancements and procedures is not the issue. She’s 63. She should do whatever she wants to look her very best and feel as confident as she deserves to feel. To me, the problem is that the work she has had done in the last few years is bad. I personally think she looks awful, and I would sue if I ended up looking like she does. It looks botched, or poorly done. Her eyelids barely exist, her cheek fillers are disproportionate and ill-placed, her eyes look like pinholes due to the enormity of the cheeks and the elongated chin, and her stretched jawline is in such contrast to the neck and chin that it looks odd at best. Yes, there are bad angles and there is always the problem of bad lighting. I’m certain that if we saw Madonna up close in person she would look flawless and there would be aspects of her mesmerizing beauty on display, but in photos she looks absolutely ghoulish to me. I understand that I am not allowed to say this out of a code of honor as a Madonna fan, but it is my truth, and one that many others also see. Additionally,  the buttock enhancement is clearly botched. It looks painfully out of place, and only an insane person would want that given the health risks of such a surgery, particularly when you have a hip replacement and serious knee issues. Again, that is my opinion, and I maintain that it is okay to critique Madonna’s physique as she has used her body for commercial and artistic ends since the beginning of her career. If she had a second head attached to her neck, would it also be outrageous to notice or feel it wasn’t the best choice (in my opinion)?
To take things further, Madonna increasingly chooses creative projects that do not  resonate with me, or large parts of her fanbase for that matter. I find the Frozen remix is of minor interest, and I truly wonder who she thinks she is playing to these days. The once intellectualized mystique I associated with her work has been demolished in the last two years. I find it hard not to cringe when I see the bizarre display of Hidden Hills McMansion photo shoots that appear far too regularly to be of significance, featuring some elfin-filtered version of herself that might appeal to the aesthetic tastes of teenage girls if it weren’t for the fact that she is 63 and they know it.
These are just simple truths to me. I don’t think these truths are misogynistic or ageist. They are just an expression of personal feeling to which I am entitled as a human being and life-long admirer of Madonna and her creative journey. It is true that the aspects of Madonna’s career that I most enjoyed are of the past. That doesn’t mean that I am not still an avid follower of her craft, and I am sure there will be Madonna projects in the future that I will be thrilled to discover. Whatever she is doing right now, however, simply isn’t doing it for me, and that, my friends, is okay.

    The End.

She didn't put much effort? Seriously? She spent almost a year working on Rebel Heart recording new music, changing lyrics, melodies, production.
That alone should prove you she was very into the music and the project as a whole, and so she was into Madame X as well, experimenting with Portuguese music, Fado and keeping the era alive (her own way) as she left the 'Madame X' Persona go on for almost three years.
Just because you're not into something, doesn't mean she is not into it as well.

That was the narrative in the media, but I'm talking about how Tupac felt when she made the joke about rehabilitating rappers and basketball players. He was the son of Black Panther Party members, so his perception of race was more militant.
In the letter to Madonna dated January 15, 1995, he wrote:  "An interview where you said ‘I’m off to rehabilitate all the rappers & basketball players’ or something to that effect those words cut me deep seeing how I had never known you to be with any rappers besides myself. It was at this moment out of hurt & and natural instinct to strike back and defend my heart & ego that I said a lot of things."
In his April 1995 Vibe cover story, he was asked about his relationship with Madonna and he said: "I was letting people dictate who should be my friends. I felt like because I was this big Black Panther type of n*gga, I couldn’t be friends with Madonna. And so I dissed her, even though she showed me nothing but love. I felt bad, because when I went to jail, I called her and she was the only person that was willing to help me. Of that stature. Same thing with Mickey Rourke—he just befriended me. Not like black and white, just like friend to friend. And from now on, it’s not going to be a strictly black thing with me. I even apologized to Quincy Jones for all the stuff I said about him and his wives."
