The BAT setlist is unreal. They are such monumental historic hits it's hard to believe they were new songs at the time.
The Girlie Show needed more. Her Erotica dance needed to be sexier, a lot of it needed to be sexier. Only Fever is pitch perfect, it's on par with BAT Express Yourself or Like A Prayer for me and yet it is totally forgotten.

Blond Ambition is of course flawless but she was even more famous in 93 than she was in 1990, why is almost everything from Erotica era completely forgotten??

The only clueless one in here is you.
Camille Paglia is a genius that mediocre people mock because she is way above them.
I did not say she had to be 40 to understand it. It's a novel for 18 year olds, she thinks she is very smart yet she is impressed by something like Memoirs of a Geisha, shows she isn't as smart as she thinks she is, her genius is definitely not intellectual, if she has it at all.
Tom Of Finland and Mapplethorpe didn't originate anything.
Words, Waiting and Secret Garden are awful and the reason why Erotica is her least popular album, even today. It hasn't grown in stature at all with the years and it's because of the non- single tracks.
You are the one that lives under a rock. No headline ever called her a slut.

I've been a fan for 23 years and my Madonna opinions have changed throughout the years, I see now things that I didn't before, and my favorite period is of course, the Erotica era and 20 years ago I naturally followed her narrative of nobody getting it, that she was badly attacked, etc.

Now I realize that a) there was nothing to get, and b) all the criticisms she got were genuine and not misoginistic. For starters she was being genuinely transgressive. The SEX book would have been controversial even if a man had done it, hence why no one ever has. What she should have done was taken the Marilyn Manson route and not give a fuck and just keep going.
Instead we have her writing whiny letters, whining in interviews, teary eyed in many, making soft albums, dressing like a school marm for 20 years, until 2008 when 50 hit her and she was desperate to be Dita again.
Makes me realize that SEX, as much as I love it, was not a genuine artistic endeavour. It was more like "Justify My Love went to number 1 and being banned has translated into success for me so I'll do it" and then she couldn't take the heat.
I wonder if she even had PTSD in 94/95, she genuinely looks massively depressed and mentally ill.
I also wonder, as much as I love Erotica/SEX/Girlie Show, why do they feel "off"?? half baked. They are not perfect like Like A Prayer/Blond Ambition are perfect.
Then I heard genius Camille Paglia's comments on her writings on the SEX book and she said that it "needed work", and maybe it did, maybe it was all too rushed. For instance, I have proven that the non single Erotica tracks should never have seen the light of day. Hear for yourselves:
In the Girlie Show In this Life and Like A Virgin are total downers. Holiday is a problem too.
Anyway would like to hear opinions on why Erotica era isn't flawless like the 80's.
Also, the same thing happened again with American Life, she recovered chutzpah thought she was invinvi le again and couldn't take the floppage. That's not what a true artist does.

    Good point.
I think, as others have said, in 1990 Madonna was really at the zenith of her career. Around the 1993 period or so, the public was just sick of her antics, what with the Erotica album, the Sex Book, and all that jazz. It seems the public took a big sigh and said, "Not this again." She was so desperate for attention that the only kind she invited upon herself was negativity.
But I do agree with what you're saying. As much as I like Blond Ambition, The Girlie Show (and everything Erotica-related) has been a  hugely underrated era of her career. The Girlie Show is a great show - it's one of my personal favorites of hers. She seemed to actually enjoy doing the show in Australia (a feeling I don't always get while watching her concerts). With Blond Ambition (I watched the Nice performance) she yaps too much. Just get to the frickin' songs, Madonna, and stop yakking about Warren Beatty and Roseanne Barr.

Give me Madonna´s 1995 vocals over any of those lady vocals, even at their peak,  any day please. If only Madonna would know she has a great voice that we love when she does things right..

At this point, it is just sad to see that her career is being disastrously mis-managed in the hands of all the toxic people she has surrounded herself with over the past few years.

BTW, what we truly need from that era is a re-release of the MDNA Tour BD/DVD with better color grading and remastered sound.

Not everyone was a fan of hers but Madonna had some supporters in the downtown club scene, Basquiat being one of them. He was excited about her impending fame before her debut album was even released. He introduced her to Andy Warhol and his art dealers. Larry Gagosian said he told her Madonna was going to be huge. Diego Cortez, co-founder of the Mudd Club, curated the post-punk art show New York/New Wave at MoMA PS1, which catapulted Basquiat to fame in 1981. He said Basquiat introduced him to Madonna and asked to help with her career. She asked him to be her manager but he declined to focus on being an art curator. Keep in mind Madonna left Basquiat, he did not leave her. Naturally, he was upset when she broke up with him but there is no indication that he hated her especially if he was still hanging out with her after their relationship ended. Keith Haring was another supporter, Martin Burgoyne, Maripol, Debi Mazar, Erika Belle, Jellybean.

I love her but I agree she is not like Jesuschrist fighting for world´s freedom. I mean, she´s not Joan Baez, and her goal was always to be the number 1 above it all. And till Rebel Heart, I think, more or less, she achieved it. Lately she can´t as she does not want to be seen as a legate artist but at the same time she is not able to connect with younger generation anymore, that´s why she is a bit lost in my opinion.
