@McDonna is absolutely right, as for the debut album, the True Blue album, the Music album and American Life album.  Each of his points concerning all those lead singles is absolutely accurate. 

"Everybody" and "Live to tell" have always been intented to be on the new album, they both have been recorded during their album sessions and are lead singles. The album was even called "Live to tell" at early stage :

"On March 6, 1986, at the Kensington Roof Gardens in London, during a press conference for Shanghai Surprise, Madonna confirmed that she was working on a new album named Live to Tell, which would be later changed to True Blue."

"American pie" & "Die another day" are 'between albums' tracks that have been added later on the following new album, more as a commercial move than an artistic choice. She has never performed "American pie" during the Music album promo and she has never performed "Die another day" during the promo shows of the American life album. They obviously weren't lead singles.

"Like A Prayer", simply, have it all: - A killer song, in general - A killer chorus - A killer vocal (and it's the original demo vocal!!!) - A killer controversial video - A killer middle 8 - A whole narrative around it (Pepsi, the Vatican, etc.) - A Madonna classic loved by the GP It's the one.

I do consider Live to Tell the 'lead single' since it was intended as a "forthcoming single" for True Blue from the get-go.  Die Another Day less so, as it wasn't intended as the lead single, but only included, no doubt to help the sales of American Life.  As for American Pie, that was only included on certain regions of the Music album, and Madonna never really wanted that song on the Music album.  However my choice will still remain as "Like A Prayer" as the best lead single released from

Like A Prayer is seriously sooo overrated… my choice will be between Frozen, Music and Hung Up.
