After several listens, I just can't get through the American Life songs - she picked the strangest remixes. But I also always thought most of her 2000s remixes are among her weakest. Everything from the 90s is so flawless though. 

To be honest they've worked their a***s off to get that #1: not only countless editions, also store signings, interviews and promo this week, etc. I don't particularly like them but they deserve it.
On the contrary, no promo at all for Madonna in the UK. In the US at least she got Fallon and the Nile Rodgers event, but not a single paper interview for the UK, nothing... plus the official UK store stock issues. #3 is great considering all.

I would LOVE to ser her being #1 BUT I also want to see her doing promo with interviews and performances. The last time we saw her doing something quite god was for Confessions On a Dance Floor and Rebel Heart.
Doing promo and trying to be everywhere is not being desperate, is showing interest on the release and giving something to the public to care about.
I'm sorry but she doesn't deserve to be #1 in the UK when Steps have been working so hard to sell the record (I'm not a fan).

You mentioned that Kate always charts higher than Madonna but Madonna's albums always debut at #1 or #2 (studio albums) since 1984. She never had a studio album peaking at #3 or less since her first one in 1983. 
The live albums Madonna releases has their sales separated between 2 charts because she never releases only on CD. There's DVDs, Blu-ray's etc. So you don't know where they would chart if all editions had CD. Talking about her tours here.
And we're talking about the UK only cause if you start to check ww numbers it would be a mess for Kate Bush.

Can you blame them for working extra hard for a #1? If you do more promotion, you have an advantage - and they just do their job.

And it makes sense as to why they chose album versions for Material Girl and Like a Virgin.

I love the booklet's notes about the songs 

It's a remix album, pure of remixes of her 50 dance hits. Of course, they're going to sound different from the album versions.

I read the story was something like Warner was pushing Amazing as a single but she was against the idea because she wanted Impressive Instant to be next. Being aware of what the label could do, she didn't sing Amazing in the DWT to avoid Warner releasing a "live video".
