I think it's absolutely incredible that folk were talking about it beforehand like she was Michael Jackson going into the This Is It tour. It was going to be a disaster, she couldn't perform anymore, it might not even happen. And here we are, a critical and commercial success, one of history's largest concerts to end, a triumph in every respect.
I was lucky enough to attend opening night in London and I've never felt energy like it at a gig. I'll never forget it.

Dude, she was rehearsing with the mask long past the sun going down.  And let's not criticize her for caring about her skin.  Comparing her to a "vampire" is being a bit critical. You must remember her mother died of cancer, so whatever you think of her over reacting, no doubt she is being cautious for reason. It's her life! She has every right to live it the way she pleases.

Jokes apart, I think ROL was great because Orbit had a lot of material already done and Madonna knew how to make it hers. It was a sound current at the time, particularly in the UK.
The sound of alternative and rock bands working along trip hop, big beat and electronic artist/djs was on. The evolution of Rave into Chill. Madonna was in the right place at the right time doing the right thing. Same applies to working with Mirwais when the french electronic sound, electroclash and detroit techno was taking over.
 
 

Well that was the flip of the coin when instead of working with known but bit obscure producers dusting off their demos, she gave total liberty to work with a producer shitting mainstream hits. Timbaland has a great portfolio of work behind him but at that time he was just racing with Will I.AM and the lot to do cookie cutter songs.
It was the beginning of the music streaming culture and music production suffered from it.

I'm sure it would haven been a scandal and complaints everywhere.
I remember it was around the time the LAP demos cassette was auctioned and he uploaded some unreleased stuff on YouTube... my bet is Madonna and him reconnected because of that and he decided not to go ahead with his own project for whatever reason. Also, we know a "LAP" reissue was probably planned (and finished?) for 2019 so maybe he became involved and decided to put apart the other project?

I went totally crazy for a lot of his books in the 1990s and 2000s, especially In the Country of Last Things that I still recommend to any reader.
He wrote and co-directed a couple of movies, including Blue in the Face (title: Brooklyn Boogie in some countries). A loose story made of different situations with recurring characters, where Madonna appears in a short skit. Happened in the middle of the 1990s when she was very active in Hollywood and the New York scene, made the headlines back then because she was in such an indie production, proved once more she's such a showgirl with a comedic flair. I loved the film, which has aged rather well.

Yeah he was a DJ and when he made the club in Asbury Park he kept Djing and hosting. I always thought he was more involved in the production but reading that interview (that i forgot about it) I realised lots of the 'Shep sound hits" were product of their collaboration together. He always speaks about it as such a Madonna/Shep thing. Even the Janet Jackson remix that was a base for Vogue.
