    true.

i was over exaggerating. but mdna was all edm, not preachy (less so than confessions) and was that paint by numbers confessions many wanted. remember ray of light were orbit demos he wasn't using at that point.

mdna was the anti hard candy, european, no rnb and souless edm at that. she clearly had a touring deal and phoned the album in. orbit even said he had more songs and didn't know the album was done as he still wanted to work on more stuff.

madonna is best when her fanbase are ignored. ignore the hardcore fans and she can make interesting stuff

her deal came to an end so she left.

madonna's deals have never been broken down on what they are but bits and pieces have leaked out over the years.
essentially, she got a good deal at the start of her career and more control than most acts would have had, as she blagged her deal. stein liked her and she apparently pestered him. warner clearly did not expect anything big from here and i doubt anyone did at first.

by the 90s and 00s warner and madonna were still promoting her like they had in the 80s. she rarely performed on every tv show and promoted on tv beyond the first single of an album.

warner couldn't release anything without her agreeing and she couldn't release anything without them agreeing

they literally played games with each other and stubborness meant we have so few special editions with extra bonus tracks, compilations, bonus tracks, remasters etc etc.

by the time celebration happened the industry was dead so she made a touring deal. made sense at the time i suppose

if madonna recorded her first 2 albums in the hard candy era, they would sound like hard candy

hard candy is a pop disco rnb record like her first 2 albums. working with pharrel is like working with nile rodgers back then.

the difference is she's older, her audience wants her to make the album they want.

i think hc is a very very madonna album. people just didn't want madonna making that record in her fanbase and she's older.

    i prefer it than confessions

It’s funny when fans complain about the Sound being to influenced by Justin and Timbaland and then they single out Devil as their favorite track. Which is literally Cry Me A River Part II.
I totally agree with your take on this. I find all the Justin/Timbaland tracks unoriginal and dated at the time of the release.
But the Pharrell tracks are amazing and totally make up for it.

    No.
I really don't get why this era is such a hard one for so many fans to 'get'. Probably because I personally don't worship at the alter that is Confessions. That said, interesting points above, but I think a lot of it has to do with the fact that the previous era was certainly something special to many fans, and has since been glorified into this untouchable thing. And particularly with those that seem to think M is disco, disco, disco. Yeah, I know, that will piss some folks off, but as the years go by, it becomes that much more obvious. And yet, all her music up until then (and since) had shown she really is so much more than just that. Don't get me wrong, it was a very special era, but she really is more than just 'Confessions'. Just as she is more than just 'Blond Ambition' and 'Vogue' and 'Ray of Light'.
The irony is that Hard Candy is pure dance, through and through. It's just another take on it. It's rooted more in American R&B and funk-influenced dance (aka the Black/urban tradition) vs the more Euro-influenced sounds of the previous record. Ok, so it wasn't the most cutting-edge sound at the time, but that rhetoric itself regarding M and her music (in my opinion) has also been somewhat romanticized over the years. A great deal of her work at commercial/critical peaks has always essentially been 'of the moment'. She's just more often executed it better than anyone at any given time. That said, it's still an incredibly solid record that personally has much more replay value than the previous. And lastly, it's rooted in the very music that started her out on that first record. It is the 'return to her roots' more than Confessions ever really was.
In the end, it was just part of the continual evolution that is 'Madonna' the artist. It was also clearly time for her to "exorcise the demons" of what she was going through. Not to mention what it was saying (visually and musically) about a woman her in 50s. Performance-wise it was unmatched - she was an absolute beast. Incredible promo concerts. And quite frankly, one of her greatest tours that solidified her as the touring beast (#1 number for a female/solo), and proved she was capable of doing something in her 50s that very few, if any, of her peers (male or female) could ever attempt to do on stage.
I may be in the minority...so be it. I LIVE for funky, R&B Madonna.
Her sugar will forever be raw.
    Long live Hard FUCKING Candy.

i disliked the album on release and presumed it would grow on me. i like it even less now.

that being said i hated confessions on a dancefloor and still only consider it average now.

i also think hard candy is exceptional and erotica is her strongest work

i also think ray of light has dated really badly

IMHO, Ferry Corsten and Offer Nissim are terrible electronic acts, they remind me of the time when M would have all her singles remixed by Tracy Young, awful techno-trance that sucks the soul out of every lyric with oh so repetitive and generic synths. I know all these DJs have their fans and have crafted part of the electronic sound of the 1990s and 2000s but I was never touched by big room style remixes, that always sound the same and strip the melody off every song.

My question is why would you want that? Mainstream music is so vapid, nothing of any value, and all those involved are generally puppets who are too weak to stand for anything unless it is pre-approved (yeah I am looking at you Beyonce) We are currently in the most socially turbulent time since about the 1960's, yet the mainstream music scene is silent.

Here are some reasons why I think Madonna has had trouble and why she might not have another top 40 hit.

The biggest mistake she made was taking a back seat to her producers, her songs no longer were Madonna songs, they became more the work of her producers with a bit of Madonna thrown in. Also the amount of absolute crap she has put with in more recent years with producers is shocking to me.

Sorry, but who here believes someone like Pharell could make Madonna cry and still be alive and working today? Who here believes that Diplo would be missing in action and Madonna would have to chase him down just to get the album finished, or that William Orbit would bitch about Madonna not even being in the studio most of the time.

Does that sound like Madonna? Not to me.

Radio in the US dumped Madonna in 2003 and never looked back, despite her continuing international success, so she might have a chance for an international hit, but a US hit, not likely. Since 2003 Madonna has become more politically vocal, so she would have alienated a large portion of casual fans who might have liked her music.

Those pop singers that do well, generally keep their mouths shut. Taylor never makes political statements, she couldn't even drag herself to the women's march for an appearance despite her girl army antics. Beyonce waited until BLM became popular, jumped on, then jumped right off again once the backlash began, and was silent about the blatant discrimination in Houston against those who are LGBTQ+. Anyone ever hear anything even slightly controversial from Adele? Katy? Any of them? Even Miley with her rebel heart is pretty silent on the big issues. Those who compare her to Madonna, well, no.

These pop singers know their audience is not just liberal minded, they have conservative fans too. Madonna doesn't care, she says what she wants and there are consequences for that.

Pop singers these days can't even manage a hit without resorting to payola and cheap tricks. Now you have to release every song off the album at once and see which one sticks and promote it, if that fails, just move on to the next song, can you imagine Madonna doing this?

They also buy back their own music to give it exposure, buying back is cheap as obviously they get money back on any sale. If you think big stars of today are not doing this, think again.

There are certain performers who obviously have industry media in their back pocket. Remember Roger Friedman and Mariah's unholy alliance, or the way Billboard has basically propped Gaga, changing rules and then changing them back and giving her the woman of the year award in a year when she did basically f**k all and had little to no success. Is it any wonder why you will see a song slide down the charts into the abyss, then magically hit the top 10 some weeks later, lol to anyone who thinks a well timed tv performance makes that happen.

Back to the ageism, yes it is there, but it isn't just about the media. I know a lot of younger people who will gladly admit Madonna is a legend, but have zero interest in anything she does, they don't care how good it is. Most 20 something year olds just won't listen to anyone in their 50's and 60's. They are apathetic about her, that is basically a sign your mainstream success is done.

It feels as if Madonna let go of the idea of mainstream success, so I see her doing more music that is totally against the mainstream (that is my hope) her living overseas will most likely bring a more world music flavour to her songs and it feels like she is more in charge and quite passionate. Really all she needs is to gain back her control in the studio and we will have a solid album.

Will this mean a possible hit in the future? Possibly, but frankly I doubt it.
