I am quite sure I read somewhere lucky star and borderline were shot back to back but I couldn’t remember the source.

Unless we see proof I do not believe it was shown on mtv at the same time as Borderline, that would make no sense. It was done for the uk.

Billboard published MTV's rotation list. Lucky Star was added in May on light rotation. So it wasn't promoted as a new single or competing with Borderline. It was likely due to the fact that the B-Side to the Borderline 12" was Lucky Star.

Madonna was heating up at this point and MTV likely was taking advantage of that, along with Sire/WB. Just remember on MTV Burning Up was played when Holiday was the single in release. Sire was really just throwing everything out there in the hopes something would help her cross over to mainstream success.

Also remember WB refused to release Into the Groove as a single but it didn't stop radio stations from ripping the audio from the music video and playing the song on radio until WB gave in and put out the Angel/Into the Groove 12"

I always assumed the LS video was shot much later even after LAV. Didn’t she say in one of the interviews that LAV was good to go but suddenly the first album was gaining momentum so WB decided to properly release LS.

Nope, it aired on MTV for the first time on March 25, 1984 and aired on Top of the Pops March 29, 1984. She likely shot the video right after her London promo trip in January. Likely why it comes across as basically a live performance similar to what she had been doing around that time with the same outfits.

One Sire or WB exec said Lucky Star was never supposed to be a single in the US, but Madonna got sued for the first time and they convinced her to release it to make some quick money, and MTV in May 84 started playing the video on light rotation along with Borderline. The video caught steam and Sire released a plain sleeve 7", basically spending little to no money on it.

Borderline was only released as one Sire/WB exec wanted to show the more serious/Adult contemporary side of her. It was the planned single from at least Nov or Dec 83 as the George Holz photoshoot (the one used on the re-released First Album) which was actually shot in Dec 83 for the Borderline cover and an upcoming Interview Magazine piece on her.

No, Lucky Star was filmed in February 1984. It's on public record as so. Borderline was filmed beforehand between the dates of Jan 30th to February 2nd. Keep in mind, Madonna wasn't an artist really played on MTV up until this point.  Borderline was the song that really put her on the map on  the video front.  This was all in early '84.  With the success of Holiday, on radio her first album was getting more and more buzz.  By the time, Borderline was released and become top 10, she was already working on her follow up album Like A Virgin.  In fact, it was originally going to be released in June of 1984, but then her record Company decided to release Lucky Star after the success of Borderline.  MTV begin airing Lucky Star by the spring and summer of '84.  In fact, MTV wanted Madonna to perform Lucky Star at the first VMA's but she decline and insisted on performing a new song, which was Like A Virgin.  The album Like a VIrgin was delayed due to the success of Borderline and Lucky Star in the U.S.

Keep in mind, "Lucky Star" was already released as a single in the UK the year prior.  It was originally going to be third single in the U.S., but Holiday was released instead due to it being a popular radio song already.

Regarding her Videography: her first official video was Everybody, but it wasn't really played on video stations.  Burning Up was her second single and video.  While MTV did play it, it was rare.  It wasn't until the release of the video/single Borderline that MTV really paid her a lot of attention.  Lucky Star became a top 10 in the U.S. by  the summer of '84 which led to the popularity of the video during that same year.

She really didn't consider "Everybody" her first official video until years later.  Early on, she considered Burning up being her first video and considered Borderline her second.  The Lucky Star Video wasn't filmed until after Borderline as stated before.  It didn't air until months later after Borderline's success.

Borderline was filmed around Feb 12. We have BTS footage with the clapper board that show she is on set Feb 12. Not sure where Jan 30 came from. Maybe Lucky Star was shot during those dates. I assume the confusion is from the Smash Hits interview where she is called up to return to do a music video and everyone has assumed it was Borderline.

Where did you discovered this about mtv starting play it on may? I'm trying to find out when the video was recorded and released, the informations around are so confusing.

Billboard magazine published MTV's rotation list and showed new adds. Actually I found out the video was first seen Mar 25, 1984 on an MTV show called IRS Records presents The Cutting Edge. A monthly show on MTV two days before Top of the Pops aired it. So it officially had its debut in the US.

Borderline was filmed mid Feb (around Feb 12) I think Lucky Star was done just before this. The single was released in the UK Mar 05. I am certain Madonna got back from her London trip in late Jan, early Feb and shot the video.

This is were the problem will lie.  No ticket says "Madonna will start" at 8:30.  It just says the "show starts" and the fact she provides an opening DJ, by 8:30 or shortly after, I can see this being thrown out.

I have to laugh because if these people were so upset to the point they would sue, why go to all three concerts?  And you can't tell me that they didn't know beforehand she would be late since most every show before was reported she didn't take the stage until 10 pm or after.  Not only that, this has been the case for the last several tours.  Even those who aren't big fans knew just word of mouth she wouldn't' be taking the stage until 10 pm.

I guess they could argue over what is on the ticket and advertising. The only people advertised on anything, either tickets or billboards/ flyers, that I could see, are Madonna and Bob the Drag Queen. So they could argue the show doesn't start until they hit the stage.

Effectively saying that an opening act they didn't know they were getting when they paid for the tickets is not part of the show and not considered the start of the advertised show. If Bob the Drag Queen came out for a 2 hour set, game over.

I do think this will be thrown out but I can also see a lawyer arguing the above if needed.

Agree. There were some really strange, jarring moments- for me the most bizarre was when it suddenly went from Human Nature to Crazy For You. But overall I think the selection was good. Just maybe rearrange a little.

I just really hope Rain, Bedtime Story and especially Bad Girl are permanent and don’t get rotated w/other songs.

It’s be cute if she inserted Frozen after Rain maybe. That was the one omission I felt the most. More than Material Girl or Express Yourself.

I hope Bad Girl is always there too. If it relies solely on having Mercy at the Piano, I do wonder if it was meant to be permanent or not. I assume she isn't going to be playing all shows???

Maybe someone else will play the piano in her place.

WHAT. A. SETLIST. From the clips I have seen it looks amazing though I'm wondering if she'll change things up from night to night since some songs were left off (praying for "Frozen" to get added back in).

I get the feeling she may have rehearsed more than she needed each night to change things up. Also tech issues and curfew may have lead to her shortening the show. I guess we will find out as the tour progresses

Yeah i think due to the simplicity of the show, two things she can easily swap songs out and put other rehearsed songs in as she pleases and she can get through the whole tour without becoming ill again.  There could be a 2nd leg with a revised setlist like Sticky and she might do South America, ASIA AND AUS possibly.

I hope she comes to Australia. I doubt it but I hope. I can't travel to see her so it would be awesome to see this show. I don't even care....just glad to have her with us.

  9. What is the opening? I feel like the streams started 30min in to the show. I don't think Nothing Really Matters opens the show right?

Yeah it's a bit of a glorious mess. The snippets kinda killed the vibe as I feel like the crowd didn't want to get too invested in case a song was going to get cut short. When ROL was on the crowd didn't seem that hyped and I loved that number.

I did expect Express Yourself. The 7" version would have been hot af

There will be a massive expectation gap between general greatest hits expectations and what this is... Papa Dont Preach tease for example...you can lose an audience energy pretty quick with a tease like that and its gone to some amazing areas for dedicated fans and as one its hard to judge, l love it other than costumes and its really not adding story other than visually... l was hoping for anecdotes from M

Yeah you might be right. Cramming so many short pieces together might be killing the vibe a bit

Because it worked till 2006. Also they are older... are we expecting a Causing a commotion like when they were on their 30's? I'm glad that Madonna moves on from things, and try new always, despite sometimes it could be better or worse, but the same formula it's not a guarantee of success... that happened again working with William Orbit etc...

No one expects Causing a Commotion style numbers. Drowned World didn't have them and the three of them still worked well together. Confessions didn't have that style of number and if Niki had been there it would have worked. Rain is one of the more memorable moments from the trio and all they did was sit on stools and sing.

Also Move on? How long has Jaime King and Kevin Antunes been involved in her tours? King has been with her for 20 years and is back again and Antunes was with her at least 15.

Now Stuart Price is coming back on board, I don't think bringing Niki and Donna back would be some big step back for her, especially considering this is a celebration of her musical career that they were both a big part of for many years.

yep, you right! Pioneer's hope was to invest in M which was at the height of her success and to sell its products as much as possible, unfortunately it didn't help.

I don't know about London, on Ebay u can find secondo night gig unsold tickets (the July 21 date was added later) and I bought the July 7th date in Paris which then never took place...

yes, the costs were high for the production and the concert was very daring and many did not want to publicize it. Here in Italy, the states were paid by Zard very late, in fact there was a controversy about it

Didn't know about London and Paris also having issues. I figured the July 7 date was moved earlier to July 6 but I guess she was planning four dates for Paris.

I know in Germany people were cooling towards her and she was sliding a bit popularity wise. Maybe it wasn't massive, not sure.

I thought the Pioneer deal did help but I guess it didn't. I know her laserdisc was a big seller, but I guess that didn't translate to any further disc or hardware sales.
