Was he pretending?  He does know how to play guitar.  I do realize that most likely he we weren't really hearing him play, but he could have been playing along with a backing track or just playing to the song still.

There's times he is not playing a chord at all but it looks like he is strumming lol

Yeah, I didn't pay a lot of attention if he's really playing, but he does know how to play guitar, so I can see him possibly strumming along.
