Yeah and I agree. Being she's not in the States now, I doubt there will be a new VMA performance now. But, it's all good as new performances are coming in our future and soon. It's always worth the wait.

20 Best MTV VMAs Opening Performances

19 Madonna feat. Lenny Kravitz (1998)

In the late Nineties Madonna began expanding her on-record religious interests beyond Catholicism, and 1998 album Ray of Light honored them explicitly — particularly "Shanti/Ashtangi," a Hindu prayer paired with a William Orbit beat. Clad in a black dress and her hair ironed flat, Madonna performed part of that track to open the 1998 VMAs on a more subdued-than-usual note. But things soon got frantic: The dress was quickly dispensed with (in favor of a tank top) and she broke into Ray's brightly curious title track accompanied by Lenny Kravitz and an array of flipping and breaking dancers.

9 Madonna (1989)

The VMAs have always been a place for Madonna to flex her visual savvy, often meaning a performance both iconic and distinct from the aesthetic of her hit videos. In 1989, however, she opened the broadcast by bringing a scaled down version of David Fincher's Fritz Lang fever dream in "Express Yourself." Wearing a lace bustier temporarily concealed by a baggy suit jacket, Madge descends a staircase, the steps lighting up as she touches them, "Billie Jean"-style. Years before Michael Jackson created controversy with the "Black or White" video, she grabbed her crotch while the microphone was held in place by her cleavage.

8 Madonna (1993)

Before there was Jo Calderone, there was Madonna's gender-bending performance of "Bye Bye Baby," the singer donning a tailcoat and top hat in a burlesque/bordello setting that previewed Madonna's 1993 Girlie Show World Tour, which would kick off in a few weeks. In retrospect, the song selection is strange — "Bye Bye Baby" wasn't even released as a single in the States. But Madonna's VMAs portfolio is stacked with captivating presentations, and the risqué "Bye Bye Baby" performance (full of stroked inner-thighs, spanks, frottage, etc.) was another visual stunner.

1 Madonna feat. Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera and Missy Elliott (2003)

Yeah, yeah, yeah, there is a famous kiss that happened within these five minutes, but don't let that overshadow the monster summit of talent and fame collected on one stage. This is Madonna, arguably the most famous female pop musician who ever lived. This is Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera, twin titans of teen-pop, both between multi-platinum albums. This is a tribute to the most iconic Video Music Awards performance of all-time (Madonna's "Like a Virgin" in 1984) that ultimately became the second most iconic Video Music Awards performance of all time. And after a wedding, who would be better for the reception than Missy Elliott? How we settled for Mya and Pink on "Lady Marmalade" after this is anybody's guess.

I can't believe they picked the ROL feat. Lenny Kravitz performance : these were some of her worst vocals ever !

You are right, they were, but, it was still such a hot performance. I loved it. So sexy...both of them!

It's all about the performance on that one. Obviously, they aren't choosing it for it's vocals. Though, when she sang the first "Ashanti...", she did sound great. It's once she went into "Ray of Light."  I honestly thought she was going to get bashed for that performance afterwards, but back then, the awards she won overshadowed it. People didn't really shoot her down for her vocals, because the performance and energy was outstanding. It was a great moment for you. Shame it did end up not being a great vocal, and I suspect as time goes by, I can see some criticizing and bashing her vocals. But it's one of those performances, you had to be there at the time. She pulled people in. Also, MTV AWARDS tend to be very known for botched vocals or a lot of bad lipsyncing.

Do we know where Madonna is at the moment? she posted that "back on the grind" instagram. So I suppose her vacations are over?

Wasn't Express Yourself the closing number of the 1989 ceremony?

Again, I don't think anything will happen at all. It's too soon and the last time the Like a Virgin performance was honored was in 2003 which was strange enough considering the fact that the song was released in 1984... 19 years before... it would have made sense if they were 20 years... Sometimes I think Madonna decided to make the performance since American Life was such a flop :) and the lesbian kiss would make people talk.

If Madonna wants to promote her new album she still has the EMA and the Grammys ahead as big tv platforms.

MTV VMAs 2014: From Michael Jackson to Beyonce, the Top 10 music videos of all time
With the MTV Video Music Awards airing on Sunday, Jim Farber provides you with the only 'best of' list you will ever need.

MTV created the VMAs to celebrate the top creations from the world of music video. Today, videos are seen by more people than ever - albiet on places like YouTube and fan web sites, not MTV. So, for the latest VMAs, airing Sunday, we decided to toast the 10 Best Music Clips of all time:

10) RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS, "GIVE IT AWAY" (1991)
More homoerotic than a Calvin Klein ad, the "Give It Away" video features the well-muscled funk-rockers, stroking themselves, implicitly pawing each other (through the wonders of editing), and shimmering in silver. It’s visually rhythmic, architecturally impressive and hot. What's not to like?

9) JOHNNY CASH, "HURT" (2002)
Mark Romenek's moving, and pained, piece for a then 70-year-old Johnny Cash — shot the year before he died — showed him surrounded by memories of his distant past. For maximum poignancy, the antique images are strewn around as rotting totems, decaying in the harsh light of the present.

8) WHITE STRIPES, "FELL IN LOVE WITH A GIRL" (2002)
Fell in love with a girl video music the white stripes from sebastien fau on Vimeo.

Michele Gondry went loco with Legos for this hilarious, adorable, and oddly subversive clip. The director created an entire story line out of the little plastic toy blocks, animated to intensify the song's depiction of a jittery, witty, and deeply quirky kind of love.

7) BEYONCE, "SINGLE LADIES" (2008)
A Minimalist masterpiece, Jake Nava's clip keeps the camera on the money: It focuses entirely on Beyonce in a body suit and high-heels (backed by two mirror-image dancers). The way Queen Bey gyrates here transcends her role as sex symbol to represent female power at its most triumphant.

6) PETER GABRIEL, "SLEDGEHAMMER" (1986)
The winner of more MTV Moon Men — 10 — than any clip in history, Stephen R. Johnson's vision presents the song as a stop-action animation fantasia. It bursts with enough visual puns and animated absurdities to delight and surprise, even after scores of views.

5) NIRVANA, "SMELLS LIKE TEEN SPIRIT" (1991)
Nirvana - Smells Like Teen Spirit from ARTMIX Photography on Vimeo.

Samuel Bayer nailed the dank, angry vision of grunge-revolutionary Kurt Cobain in the band's breakthrough short. Set in a high school gym, the video turns the idea of jock conformity inside out. Here, the cheerleaders boost the cause of insurrection, while the band brings its cultural revolt to a head.

4) DON HENLEY, "BOYS OF SUMMER" (1984)
Don Henley - The Boys Of Summer from Krystian Feledyn on Vimeo.

Star movie director David Fincher showed his early talent in this stunning black and white short for the wan Henley hit. Fincher created an ideal depiction of nostalgia gone morose. The clip looks every bit as sad and beautiful as the song sounds.

3) TALKING HEADS, "ROAD TO NOWHERE" (1985)
Under the co-direction of Stephen R. Johnson and top Head David Byrne, "Road To Nowhere" offered a wry twist on existential dread. Here, we see the band age, and the life cycle spiral, in a smartly observed, amusingly detailed, dance of futility.

2) MADONNA, "LIKE A PRAYER" (1989)
This may be the most insane video ever made (a compliment), True to her character, Madonna aimed to offend everyone she possibly could with this fast-moving clip. Directed by Mary Lambert, the short includes a scene of the star having sex with a saint in a church (bonus: he's black). But the killer scene finds Madonna writhing around erotically in a field of KKK-style burning crosses. Who but Madge would think to use one of the most potent symbols of evil in American history as ideal back-lighting?

1) MICHAEL JACKSON, "BEAT IT" (1983)
Sorry, but "Thriller" isn't the King of Pop’s greatest clip. It's just his longest. "Beat It," directed by Bob Giraldi, broke real ground when it appeared in Jackson's big year, 1983. It did so through its fully fleshed-out plot (a “West Side Story†scenario, involving some real life gang members) as well as for the then-unheard of use synched sound. (Remember that clacky opening garage door towards the clip's start?). But it's the final, swaying choreography that makes the clip endure. It gave Jackson and his dancers a magical sense of movement.
