Why is Madonna so underrated?

^ funny how people keep adding Prince Into the all time legends list. Because he died?

A year ago no one would be mentioning him in the same list

And Prince has NOWHERE NEAR the commercial success of the Beatles, Elvis, MJ or Madonna the top 4 biggest selling acts ever worldwide.

Prince has always been considered a legend, and always will be. This is not just something that has occurred in the months following his death. One must remember, he was in the business longer than Madonna, and though he did not share the sales of Madonna, he gained much more respect as a musician and pioneer in the industry. Always remember the holy trinity of the 80s (and 90s), Madonna, MJ and Prince! :)

Yeah and Madonna had more top 10 hits in the 90s than MJ and Prince COMBINED.

Friend Prince was a legend long before his tragic untimely end :suffer: . Perhaps the uppermost tribute to someone's greatness; is being lauded by your contemporaries @ Madonna, Steve Wonder and others have enunciated about the Minnesota icon.

Would love to see more of her art projects in the future, less commercial but genious.

Culture shifts. Pop music is a capitalist's marketing dream. The consumer is defined from the onset, and there is a limited shelf life for the product that sometimes lasts longer for some than others. Madonna is fantastic and in a league of her own, but that will only be obvious in several generations. In the meantime, with the ever-quickening of trend replacement and recycling, prepare to see her legacy diminish drastically in the coming decade. That's just how the system is rigged. Her artistry could continue to flourish, but the number of people paying attention with historical knowledge and context will shrink. Let's also not forget that Madonna was essentially a corporate dream in the 1980s. Many more "serious" artists and their fans had complete disdain for her.

Madonna is actually lucky that she had two decades of success and relevance, her record label made sure she took just the right amount of breaks, not releasing the same album over and over again as some of her contemporaries etc. These days she seems to be on the same level Prince was in the past decade, trying hard to score a hit but radio does not touch her, she has to perform the same hits on tour to make sure the audience is there for the next one. It's not like albums sell much these days but it was widely assumed her fans would continue to buy her physical releases. It didn't happen despite multiple editions. Let's not forget she wanted to release a double album most likely to be free of her contract, so it's anyone's guess how her artistry is going to flourish if the corporate factor is no longer supporting her.

She's relevant and most certainly not underrated. Do not confuse music sales and chart numbers as a guide to someone's relevance. She may not be relevant to the music buying public of late. But is certainly relevant to the music industry and her peers young and old.

Society has changed so much in twenty years, she's had decades of success, it's unlikely that the stars of today will achieve that, not because they aren't any good, but because society is so consumer driven - we all want the latest - Music is so much more accessible now, you don't need a label to release it, so there's so much more competition, so much more to choose from and in a world of consumerism and disposability, longevity is impossible.

So essentially, Madonna is relevant and always will be and is so fortunate to have been "born" in an era that suited and allowed and facilitated her rise - a perfect storm if you like - music was evolving, video was born, and thus an artist brand was born. The next big change was in the mid 00's with YouTube and stars like Justin and Katy Perry were born on the back of that.

Madonna had THREE decades if success the 80s,90s and 2000s where she was the 3rd top selling act of that decade worldwide aster only Eminem and Britney. The #3 top touring artist if the 2000s and the #1 selling singles artist in both the US and worldwide of the 2000s.

Amazing stats.

And her album sales are FINE in this sakes market.

MDNA was the #12 top selling album of 2012

RH sold 1.2 million despite leaking in full 6 months in advance and ended up among the top 40 selling albums of 2015. If it never leaked it probably would have equaled the 2 million worldwide sales

of MDNA

Prince released TWO albums in 2015 and they both debuted at like #40 on the charts
