Madonna Will Tour Australia and New Zealand…Finally

Madonna’s long-suffering fans Down Under can thank their lucky star. The Queen of Pop on Monday announced a long-overdue tour of Australia and New Zealand next March, which will bring to an end a perplexing 23-year wait between visits.

Sure, her fans in this part of the world will have to hold-tight for another nine months to see their hero, but that’s a cinch compared with two-plus decades they've held on since she last played here, for the Girlie Show tour of 1993. Indeed, her scheduled shows in New Zealand will be her first there.

It's not as though Madonna has a puny fanbase in these parts. Her latest albumRebel Heart opened at No. 1 on the ARIA Albums Chart in March, becoming her 11th No. 1 in Australia, a run that stretches back to True Blue which reached the summit in August 1986. No other artist can beat that tally (U2 is also on 11 No. 1s).

Arthur Fogel, chairman of Live Nation's Global Touring division, the producer of the tour, told Billboard earlier that a trek to Australasia was on the cards. "It's kind of bizarre when you think about it, that a superstar like that hasn't been to a pretty regular touring area for 25 years," he said.

The general onsale starts July 6, while customers of Telstra Thanks and Citi and members of the Icon fanclub and My Live Nation will get an earlier window.

Madonna’s 2015 Rebel Heart tour of Australia and New Zealand:

March 6 -- Vector Arena, Auckland
March 12 -- Rod Laver Arena, Melbourne
March 13 -- Rod Laver Arena, Melbourne
March 19 -- Allphones Arena, Sydney

What Madonna’s 1993 Australian concert was like and what was making news in 1993?

http://www.news.com.au/entertainment/music/what-madonnas-1993-australian-concert-was-like-and-what-was-making-news-in-1993/story-e6frfn29-1227410098456?from=public_rss

WHEN Madonna, now aged 56, first toured Australia in November 1993, her local fans were already impatient.

Australia had given Madonna her first Top 20 hit anywhere in the world, Burning Up, a decade earlier in 1983.

The song was championed by Molly Meldrum and John Peters of Countdown, and her next single, Holiday, would be the first of four decades worth of Top 5 hits here.

We’d missed three tours here, 1985’s iconic Virgin Tour, 1987’s Who’s That Girl tour and arguably her finest performance 1990s Blonde Ambition, the concert that spawned In Bed With Madonna â€” the documentary that helped pave the way for celebrity reality TV.

So after waiting a decade, 1993’s Girlie Tour arrived down under with Madonna coming off the back of the controversy of her Sex book, sexually-charged movie Body of Evidence and her divisive and, yep, sexually-charged Erotica album.

Back then fans were shocked that Madonna charged $200 for the best seats.

Fast forward to 2015 and $200 is nearly the cost of the nosebleeds at Madonna’s Rebel Heart tour next year, where the front row will cost you $2000.

And five more tours have skipped Australia, with a 23 year gap between the Queen of Pop’s royal visits down under, with fans thinking she was allergic to Australia.

The Girlie Show was not Madonna’s best tour, coming at a strange point in her career. She’d promptly reinvent herself from the dance of Erotica to R & B for Bedtime Stories then get serious with the Evita soundtrack and motherhood.

Her creative rebirth, Ray of Light, was five years away. But The Girlie Show did set the agenda for most female pop acts to follow and also how future Madonna tours would go.

If you didn’t like the Erotica album, tough luck. Most of the setlist came from that album, with just a sprinkling of older hits including then then-current Vogue and Justify My Love and slightly older Holiday, Express Yourself, La Isla Bonita and an odd version of Like a Virgin.

If you wanted Like a Prayer, Into the Groove, Borderline, Lucky Star, Papa Don’t Preach, Open Your Heart, True Blue, Crazy for You or Gambler, sorry, but how about I’m Going Bananas from the Dick Tracy soundtrack? Done.

While many others whose careers started in the ‘80s turn their concerts into nostalgia mode — you get the feeling Madonna would have to be at gunpoint to do a Greatest Hits tour.

Each tour basically plays nearly everything from her latest album, with just a handful of hits, often totally reworked.

On the 1993 tour Madonna’s second show at the Sydney Cricket Ground was filmed for a DVD (well, back then a VHS) that was proof that Madonna did tour here.

1993 wasn’t a banner year for Madonna musically although the ballad Rain was Erotica’s second Top 10 hit in Australia when tour fever kicked in.

The biggest selling song that year was Meat Loaf’s I’d Do Anything For Love (But I Won’t Do That). He’d return, long before Madonna did, and perform the song at the MCG where Madge’s Girlie Tour played to 150,000 fans over three nights in Melbourne. However Mr Loaf’s version, at an AFL Grand Final, is now in the sporting hall of shame.

It was the year that Peter Andre, Inner Circle, Sonia Dada, Snow, Ugly Kid Joe, Spin Doctors and Urban Cookie Collective thought they were shaping up for huge careers.

Ironically Madonna’s Immaculate Collection outsold Erotica in Australia in 1993, perhaps fans were buying it to hear the hits she didn’t play live.

The Bodyguard soundtrack was the year’s highest selling album, fastly followed by Eric Clapton’s Unplugged and, alarmingly, sax pest Kenny G’s Breathless.

Australia has changed since the last time Madonna was here. Back in 1993 Brisbane won the Winfield Cup (now the more politically correct NRL Grand Final) and Essendon beat Carlton to win the AFL Grand Final.

Strike a pose ... Madonna vogues in Sydney in 1993. It’s been a while, Madge. Source: Supplied

Australia had just secured the Olympics for Sydney, Paul Keating had just pipped John Hewson in the Federal Election and we were rushing to see Mrs Doubtfire and Jurassic Park at the box office.

The Piano had put Australian films on the map, Yahoo Serious extended his 15 minutes with Reckless Kelly while Priscilla and Muriel’s Wedding were in production but a year away from release.

TV gave us The X Files, the Ricki Lake Show, NYPD Blue and The Nanny.

It was also the year Ariana Grande was born, Fred Hollows died, Ray Martin left Midday, E-Street was axed and Jim Robinson, Ramsay Street’s patriarch, died of a heart attack on Neighbours.

In 1993 Madonna was 35. In 2016 Madonna will be 57 when she is back on our shores and is likely to look younger than she did 23 years ago.

I agree, the VIP's cost a fortune and sometimes you don't get the best anyway it seems. Much happier with Platinum (even though they are expensive as well, but not as expensive as VIP) and super lucky to get the block next to the stage, twice!! I read that others have had a hard time even getting tickets!!

“F*ck “ageing gracefullyâ€. Madonna can age however she wants.â€

http://www.fasterlouder.com.au/features/43147/Why-do-we-love-to-hate-Madonna

Why do we love to hate MadonnaFast Louder‘s Richard S. He questions the love/hate relationship with pop’s first lady ahead of Madonna’s first Australian tour in 23 year.

Madonna was never a bigger pariah than in 1993, the last time she toured Australia. Her infamous Sexbook had just given an enormous middle finger to the prudishness of ‘90s pop culture. Equally pretentious and tongue-in-cheek, it was a coffee table art book that had no place in most respectable living rooms. Of course, you didn’t actually have to read it – the point was just that it existed. But at the same time her complex, contradictory Erotica record suffered for it, reduced to Sex’s same hypersexual veneer. She’d become too good a provocateur. That punk rock incarnation of Madonna would feel right at home in 2015, now that Sex has paved the way for everyone from Miley Cyrus to Kim Kardashian. Popstars who weren’t alive for ‘Like a Prayer’’s release revere her. So why does it still feel like the general public can’t wait to prematurely wheel her to the retirement home?

Madonna’s been called “desperateâ€, “calculatedâ€, and much worse – usually by straight white men – ever since she rolled off the 1984 VMAs stage singing ‘Like a Virgin’ in a wedding dress. If it wasn’t true then, it’s even less true now. Nothing she did, not even Sex, was ever just bald-faced provocation. Now, Madonna has nothing left to prove except, ironically, that she still has something left to prove. No genre has a shorter memory than pop, where you’re only as good as your last move or you’re a flop. She can’t help being compared to not only all the younger, hungrier popstars in her wake but her entire three-decade legacy, like an albatross around her neck.

Once upon a time, all publicity was good publicity. But nowadays, you risk becoming a celebrity first, musician second – doubly so for women, who can’t afford not to be image-conscious whether or not sexuality is part of their art. Just as Janet Jackson, not Justin Timberlake, took the fall for that Super Bowl incident, so too Madonna suffers for planting one on Drake at Coachella. Drake’s the sad clown of rap, but it’s Madonna who’s martyring herself for our collective online amusement. Being a popstar in 2015 means constantly generating memes, Instagrams, GIFable moments – all while running the risk of becoming a punchline yourself.

“Bitch I’m Madonna†on the Tonight Show is easily the best thing she’s done this whole album cycle, a perfect take on her raucous live show. Last week’s official video transports that same freewheeling energy to an opulent New York penthouse, but in the two months since Fallon, Taylor Swift’s already changed the game. The bigger-budget, higher-concept ‘Bad Blood’ is Taylor’s #squad in video form; it got Kendrick Lamar his first number one single in comically absurd fashion. It’s one thing to get all those people in the same room; it’s another entirely to phone in cameos from half of TIDAL’s Illuminati. It could’ve been her take on Beyoncé’s ‘7/11’ ; instead, it feels like “fun†in quotation marks. Pop’s built on that thin line between influence and straight-up appropriation, but all that matters is how effortlessly you pull it off. And Madonna, she of zero-percent body fat, never half-asses anything, right?

So what went wrong?

In 2015, there’s increasingly less separation between the mainstream and underground. Lorde went from ‘Royals’ to fronting Nirvana in under a year; pop is unquestionably art once again. It feels like the biggest moment for the counterculture since the sixties, but in fast-forward, with laptops instead of guitars. Madonna’s method was always to find new sounds and producers, and bring them above ground. 1998’s Ray of Light was the first real electronica record by an existing popstar, but what made it truly great was how she rebuilt herself around William Orbit’s production. But today’s bedroom producers are perfectly content to stay underground. Seapunk, witch house, trap rave, bubblegum bass – scenes are born and die faster than you can rope in a collaborator to work on a major label’s plodding release schedule. Madonna was making house music before Disclosure were even born, and they couldn’t even make time for her! And the obvious hitmakers – Diplo, Kanye, Avicii – seem to be saving their best tracks for themselves.

Madonna albums used to be totally distinct from each other. You could name them like Friends episodes – the ‘90s R&B one, the ‘70s disco one, the folktronica one. Her latest album, this year’s Rebel Heart, could be all of them at once. It’s bursting at the seams with collaborators, but it’s both too sprawling and too familiar. Don’t call it an identity crisis – it’s deliberately loose… and yet. On the eve of her first Australian tour in 23 yearsher live show’s where she remains most herself. But with ticket prices ranging from $99 to $2000, she’s largely preaching to the converted. Madonna was the ultimate crossover artist; now, the most surprising move she could make would be to cross back out of her own fanbase.

Madonna’s never indulged nostalgia for her own work. That’s doubly admirable in 2015, now that the ‘80s revival’s lasted longer than the actual ‘80s. But its side effect is a fragmented legacy. Everyone agrees on Prince and Michael Jackson, even if no one really listens to their work past 1996. But there’s no such consensus on Madonna, a divisive figure even at the best of times. Maybe “pop†doesn’t do her justice.

Madonna released Ray of Light at 40, Confessions on a Dancefloor at 47. Those albums alone give the lie to the notion that pop’s a young woman’s gameFuck “ageing gracefullyâ€. Madonna can age however she wants, especially if the alternative means being put out to pasture in a Vegas residency. But what’s agelessness worth when the pop landscape shifts every day? She and Janet Jackson single-handedly created the modern popstar. Now everyone’s a provocateur, auteur, aspiring style icon. Madonna used to be a big fish in a small pond – now pop is an ocean. It’s like we’re living in all possible futures at once.Don’t ask if Madonna’s still got it. Bitch, we’re all Madonna.

http://m.dailytelegraph.com.au/entertainment/music/madonna-fans-snap-up-the-cheap-seats-during-telstra-presale-today-but-will-she-add-more-oz-shows/story-fni0c1az-1227421760593

Madonna fans snap up the ‘cheap’ seats during Telstra presale today, but will she add more Oz shows?

CASHED up Madonna fans have snapped up the best tickets in today’s Telstra presale for her Australian tour in March.

Within minutes of going on sale at 11am, Madge fans were disappointed to see the cheaper tickets all gone, with only single tickets in the bronze, platinum and gold sections left for shows in Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane.

Fans who wanted to buy two tickets had to pay $519 for platinum seats or floor tickets or buy what VIP packages were left.

Telstra also charged a $10 “early access fee†per ticket for their customers who used the presale, which is part of their ‘Telstra Thanks’ program.

The system has improved from the Bon Jovi presale which angered fans when it crashed in 2013.

Social media today was a mix of angry and delighted Madonna fans after the Telstra presale.

One fan asked promoter Live Nation on Facebook in regard to the cheapest bronze tickets “Would you be able to actually see her? My eyes ain’t what they were when she first came out lol.â€

Madonna’s last Australian tour was in 1993

There are four different pre-sales for Madonna’s 2016 tour. The pre-sales are run by the tour’s corporate sponsors to reward customers. At each pre-sale a limited allocation of seats across all price ranges will be available, before the remaining tickets go on sale to the general public on Monday.

The actual breakdown of how many tickets are sold in each pre-sale is not available.

Members of Madonna’s Icon fan club had first dibs last week, then a Citibank presale for card holders. The Telstra presale runs until 5pm Thursday, then promoter Live Nation has a presale for their members starting on Friday at 5pm.

General public tickets go on sale 10am Monday July 6, with no word yet as to whether Madonna will add more Australian shows to cater to demand.

There is room in the schedule — Madonna is in Australia between March 12 and March 27 but is so far only playing six shows over three consecutive weekends.

She will play her first ever shows in New Zealand on March 5 and 6 before the staging travels to Melbourne for the first Australian show on March 12 at Rod Laver Arena.

Madonna does not play concerts on Fridays for religious reasons.

However judging by the overseas dates the Rebel Heart tour seems to be designed to play select shows in indoor venues. Madonna is only playing two shows in London and New York and so far the most shows at one venue is in Turin, Italy, which gets three shows at the 12,300 seat Pala Alpitour arena. However these are in territories where the singer has toured regularly, unlike Australia.

Madonna fans are now waiting for the first show, in Canada on September 9, to find out what the set list will be.

Madonna on the set of her 1985 film Desperately Seeking Susan ... fans are hoping her new tour will include some songs from the earlier part of her career.

Madonna’s last five tours (which all bypassed Australia) generally feature most of her latest album rather than relying on greatest hits.

However fans are excited that Madonna has been quoting previous hits on Instagram, hoping they’re a teaser for the tour setlist. So far Madonna has mentioned ’80s hits Dress You Up, True Blue, Into the Groove, La Isla Bonita and Who’s That Girl? as well as 1990’s Justify My Love, 1992’s Deeper and Deeper and her cover of Love Don’t Live Here Anymore, originally on the Like a Virgin album.

Telstra also charged a $10 “early access fee†per ticket for their customers who used the presale, which is part of their ‘Telstra Thanks’ program. Lool, yes, what a way to say "thanks", charging people extra loool!

That's what I thought! Tickets aren't expensive enough as it is. Telstra are rip off cunts.

Madonna’s Rebel Heart Tour is set for two Auckland shows in March next year though demand could see more dates added.

Kiwi Madonna fans are paying thousands of dollars to make sure they don’t miss out on the first, and possibly only, time the Material Girl plays New Zealand.

A frenzy is expected at 10am tomorrow when general-sale tickets, including $2000 front-row seats, are released to eager fans, 33 years since Madonna’s debut single Everybody hit the charts.

Madonna’s Rebel Heart Tour is set for two Auckland shows in March next year though demand could see more dates added, with almost a week between the second stop at Vector Arena on March 6 and the 56-year-old’s next tour date in Melbourne on March 12.

Already, dedicated fans have snapped up a small batch of vogue, pre-sale tickets before tomorrow’s official release – with Auckland super-fan Chris Watts dropping $2600 on premium tickets to both nights.

Watts, 45, who has set up the Facebook fan page “Madonna New Zealandâ€, has travelled to gigs in Melbourne and New York. He attended shows three nights in a row at Madison Square Garden.

“I’m a member of the Madonna fan club so I purchased VIP tickets Tuesday last week,†Watts told the Herald on Sunday.

“One night I’m next to the runway and the other I’m next to the little heart stage at the end of the runway. They were a pretty expensive purchase but I’ve been a fan for 30 years.â€

In the nine-month countdown to the shows Watts says a fashion designer friend would help piece together “Madonna-inspired†ensembles for the evenings.

Another to guarantee a golden ticket is Hamilton’s Taeghan Magnus-Short, 27, who grabbed a $500 pre-sale pass. “I always hoped she would come to New Zealand, but I thought it might never happen.

“She’s underrated as a musician, but she’s also a great role model for individuality and strength. She loves to light a fire under people. I’m sure she’ll do something crazy on the night.â€
