Madonna’s Ray of Light turns 18 today

https://www.gaytimes.co.uk/culture/29765/madonnas-ray-light-18-years-old-today/

Happy Birthday to Madonna’s seventh studio album, Ray of Light.

We’re sorry if that realisation has made you feel a little old.

Now Ray of Light can now get legally get served in a club – we thought we’d put together a list of 18 interesting facts about one of the standout albums in Madonna’s extensive discography.

01. Madonna originally considered calling the album Mantra, but chose Ray of Light because she always names her albums after a track on them.

02. It peaked at number 2 in the American charts when it was released. It was blocked by the Titanic soundtrack.

03. In the UK, it spent two weeks at number 1 and to date has spent over 130 weeks in the Top 100.

04. It also went to number 1 all over Europe, including in Spain, Germany and Italy.

05. At the time, it set the record for the most sales in a week by a female artist.

06. Madonna worked on the album with British producer William Orbit, who played all the guitars on on the tracks. Fun extras fact, he remembers his fingers actually bleeding after playing so much. Nice.

07. The album won four Grammy awards, out of six nominations – including the 1998 Grammy for Best Pop Album. It also won the 1998 MTV Europe Music award for Best Album.

08. Adele is a huge fan of the album, citing it as a source of inspiration for 25. The track Frozen had a big impact on the singer, and she admitted that it gave her the “confidence to come and do me again.â€

09. The mystical lyrics and music featured on some of the tracks were a result of Madonna’s dabbling with Kabbalah and her study of Hinduism and Buddhism after the birth of her daughter Lourdes.

10. Madonna received criticism from religious group The World Vaishnava Association, after her 1998 MTV VMA performance. They weren’t happy with her wearing a Bindi while performing a simulated sex act and wearing a see-through top.

11. The title song from the album was originally over ten minutes long. Madonna said it was “heartbreaking†having to cut it down to what she called “a sensible length†of 5 minutes 21 seconds.

12. Microsoft used the song in 2001 to advertise its Windows XP operating system. An interesting pairing.

13. The song was also part of a Family Guy gag which sees Peter Griffin take on the high-pitched chorus.

14. The album came out after Madonna played Eva Peron in the hit musical Evita. The star claims it was her vocal coach, who worked with her on the movie, that was responsible for increasing her singing ability.

15. Many critics have credited the album with introducing electronica music into mainstream pop culture.

16. Ray of Light is Madonna’s third-best selling album – with an estimated 20 million copies sold. This follows Like a Virgin and True Blue which both sold around 25 million each.

17. Rolling Stone magazine said that some of her vocals on the album sounded “painfully prissy†in their review of the album.

18. The cover art was shot by legendary fashion photographer Mario Testino – who apparently kept Madonna working past 2 am to get the right shot.

Happy birthday Ray of Light!

This is a day late. I was just browsing google about Bedtime Story and found this....

"On March 10 1995, Madonna’s luscious Bedtime Story music video was given a cinematic release at three different Odeon Cineplex film theatres:

Santa Monica, California (Broadway Cinemas)

Manhattan, New York (Chelsea Theater)

Chicago, Illinois (Biograph Threater)

The one week engagement allowed attendees to enjoy the Mark Romanek directed masterpiece on the big screen for a week before the video was released on MTV.

Madonna later celebrated the premiere of Bedtime Story video by throwing a Pajama Party at Webster Hall in New York, on March 18, 1995."

Madonna’s Like a Prayer turns 27 today

https://www.gaytimes.co.uk/culture/31586/madonnas-like-prayer-turns-27-today/

That’s right. 27. And its songs are still iconic…

You’re probably feeling rather old right now, but don’t worry about that. Like a fine wine, you and Like a Prayer have simply gotten better with age.

To celebrate, we have 14 Like a Prayer facts for you, consider it a distraction from the constant march of time:

01. The Vatican predictably condemned the video for Like a Prayer, because of all of the religious themes. You could easily do a fun countdown of all the things that offended them.

02. The imagery and lyrics for Like a Prayer were inspired by Madonna’s Catholic upbringing

03. Prince played guitar on three songs from the album, including Like a Prayer.

04. Like a Prayer was of course Madonna’s fourth studio album.

05. On the controversy over the religious imagery, Madonna told the New York Times in 1989: “Art should be controversial and that’s all there is to it.â€

06. The album was top of the Billboard charts for six weeks.

07. Like a Prayer, the single, was Madonna’s seventh number one single on the Billboard Hot 100

08. Taylor Swift told Kiss FM that on this album Madonna made “the most incredible, bold, risky, decisions as far as pop music goes.â€

09. Taylor also called the title track “legitimately one of the greatest pop songs of all timeâ€.

10. Madonna talked about her relationship with her family on songs like Keep it Together and Oh Father. She had just turned 30, the age her mother died, so wanted to explore family on the album.

11. The album was a comeback after the relative lack of success of her film Who’s That Girl in 1987 and her divorce from Sean Penn in 1989.

12. Mary Lambert – no, not that one, this one â€“ directed the Like a Prayer video. She worked with Madonna multiple times, including the videos for Like a Virgin and Material Girl.

13. Madonna starred on Broadway in a show called Speed-the-Plow during production of the album.

14. The second single off the album, Express Yourself, has long been an anthem for empowering women

^ good article but LAP was in no way shape or form a comebackIt followed the biggest selling female album in HISTORY at the time, True Blue. Yes the WTG film flopped and in her PERSONAL life her marriage ended but that gas nothing to do with her musical career which was at its peak at the time.

More Madonna: She'd been inspired by dancer/choreographers Jose and Luis Xtravaganza from the Harlem "House Ball" community, who introduced "vogue"-ing to her at the New York club Sound Factory. Twenty-six years ago today, her song "Vogue," with its iconic back-and-white video, struck a pose atop the Billboard Hot 100 for the first of three weeks.
