But sometimes they use stems for what is called “stem mastering,” which is essentially the same process as mastering but with more control over each element.

But this is something I believe only became a thing more recently. In the past it was always just a stereo mix the mastering engineer worked with after the song had been mixed.

Mastering is a specialized craft that the best engineers spend years developing an ear for.

And it's a bitch to master a song. It's even a bigger bitch to remaster from the stems to recreate the original mix, except making it sound better. Plus, it costs so much money. :(

They’ve done it with music too. There was a David Bowie album they did a new mix for and the fans hated it.

Im not sure exactly what they’ve done with this new version of MJ Thriller. They are trying to sell it like it’s new and improved, better than the original blah blah blah. I would bet money everyone will hate it  

People want it to sound like the songs they know, not some new “improved” version. Thriller cannot and does not need to be improved.

The Beatles' White Album, Srgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club, Abby Road and Let It Be are remixed to make them sound more modern and some OG fans hated the new mix. I live for the new mixes.

That's why I agree with @Aiwa08 saying that they must use the stems with effects baked in them so that the mastering engineers will improve on them further without altering the mix that is familiar to a lot of people.

R.E.M. remixed the album Monster for a deluxe edition. I listened to a couple of tracks, and then decided I didn't want to waste my money on it.

The Bowie album was Never Let Me Down, and the remix was something that Bowie himself wanted since he wasn't happy about the original mix.
Same thing there. I refused to buy it.

Now if they should do it to a Madonna album, I'd buy it in a heartbeat.

128kbps is the sweetspot for Frozen on Fire, but I do hope they also sell it in 24/192.

It is likely the three Frozen remixes will appear there but as for the alteration of the audio for the album, likely not. I mean, ROL is already loud enough by today's mastering standard so it's going to be fine.

And I agree with you. A hi-res version of the expanded (maybe remastered) album would be nice. :D

I much prefer what they did with Prince’s ones. They’ve made them unique while still keeping true to the original design.
