Quite right, the "new Madonna single" momentum halted with AL (whereas Die Another Day really had an impact 6 months before), and later Hung Up relaunched her on top the charts, but the damage was done. Her musical relevance and touring success didn't suffer from it though, far from it. True Blue and Live To Tell were another time in pop history...
