On GT backdrop, they edited the 9/11 footage. You can see the 9/11 footage in the clip online (just as it aired on TV) but they zoomed in for a close up of M once the footage comes on.

You're not alone. I like both songs but I like JOA's songwriting a little better. It sounds more personal than GT.JOA also reminds me of Substitute for Love, one of my all time favorites.(especially "each time they take a photograph I lose a part I can't get back" sounds like a direct caption to the Substitute for Love video, the scene inside the car with paparazzi outside).
