Like you, I did think the song would do better in the charts, but radio (especially in the U.S.) is being reluctant in playing this.  It may be due to the possibility that radio is playing so many of his other songs still.  Then again, it may be due to Madonna being on the track. Sad if true?

The prior single also hasn’t done especially well at radio (only a little higher than the peaks for this so far), and it fell after it peaked at debut. It could also just be the sort of negative perception of the show itself holding back radio’s embracing of them.

Maybe, but I'm guessing that radio is still playing a lot of his older songs, and possibly assuming the GP isn't interested in the newer stuff.  Radio sucks!  Unfortunately, it still plays a big role in scoring big hits.  To me, I would think the fact these songs/artists are getting millions of streams, some hundreds of millions, should weight more than it does being that's how people are consuming music these days.

I agree completely! It’s stupid radio is even part of the equation anymore. It should be based off of streaming and to a lesser extent digital sales. Who even listens to broadcast radio that much anymore? Doctor’s offices and Uber drivers. And its corruption is well established- payola is real and thriving these days, and we all know how radio programmers will outright shut out some artists regardless of demand (i.e. women over a certain age). It just seems to be one of those things that’s only part of the system to justify its own existence and try to control what it can. Let it still exist as a promotional tool but keep it out of the charts I say.

I just watched the season finale of The idol. I didn't hear Popular in any of the episodes! What a disappointment... or did I fall asleep?

(Btw, I only heard it once on Italian radio)

Apart from the soft porn aspect, the series portrays well how absurd life in the music business can be.

When Mike Dean makes his appearance in episode 4 playing himself, he appears exactly as the annoying person we have seen alongside M. I don't know, he makes me unconfortable.

I never listen to the radio,only when i'm in a cab and i was in a cab twice these last two days in Paris and both time i heard Popular playing on NRJ radio and RFM (two of the most popular, pun not intended, radio stations in France) so i guess it may be playing a lot in France or it's candid camera and i'm being pranked.
