Not really 1st album but i found out yesterday reading an early interview she did with Mark Bego on the set of DSS that she came to New York before going to Univesity of Michigan. She got a scholarship to the Alvin Ailey summer classes and she said she went to University of Michigan because Chris Flynn convinced her he would prepare her for New York.

I thought she met Pearl Lang in North Carolina at summer dance camp? Then the University of Michigan and finally went to NY...:thinker:

Lucky Star became the final single in most regions for Madonna. In the U.S. it reached #4 on the Hot 100 and top 10 in various other countries.  The song was originally scheduled to be released before Holiday became popular.  Eventiually "Lucky Star" was released as the final song from the debut album, shortly before she was to take the world with LIKE A VIRGIN.  The video includes her brother Christopher Cicoone (as a dancer) who went on to work with her for years, including with directing and designing thecstage set for Girlie Show.

I remember two versions of the video, TIC and this...

It's all very confusing. She must have been to NYC many times before moving there. Her UofM roommate , Whitley Setrakian said in her boo that they went together to meet her father whose best friend was Al Pacino and they all met at the Russian Tea Room.

There's also the canadian tv interview during the promo of Ray Of Light where she said she came to NYC and was waiting for her Alvin Ailey scholarship so she could stay.

The Martha Graham school had given shelter to the Alvin Ailey dance company so it was the same building.

Yeah,  I believe this is the case.  There had never been any info of her going to NY until the time she is infamously known for being "dropped in the middle of everything with $35 in her pocket" in 1978.  What's interesting an interview with Pearl Lang, she claims Madonna to be 16 or 17 when they first met, but unless this happened at that summer camp (which is actually not very well known), then she was just mistaken or Madonna may have given a younger age at the time. It wasn't uncommon for women even then to give a different age (usually younger).  If I recall, she claimed to be younger than she was when trying out for the Fame TV show in '82 as well.

Honestly, while both versions as basic as f**k, I find the extended much superior:

It was first released on the "Madonna" VHS in 1984:

Thank you for posting this as, I was going to do the same in a follow up post.  If i recall, this video was played on music channels back in the day as much as the original.

Madonna met John “Jellybean” Benitez, who worked as a DJ at the Funhouse club in lower Manhattan in 1983. They started dating and worked on her self-titled debut album, released in 1983. When Benitez started to put together his own debut EP, he asked Madonna to write a song for him, and within two days, she penned “Sidewalk Talk”.

@tscott thank you what a fantastic thread (was redirected here from the vote for your favourite song thread). I read through the whole thing and will sit down with a glass on wine this weekend and watch all the videos.

You're so welcome.  It's great to have a somewhat master thread of all things from her debut album. I'm glad many helped contribute to it.  Of course, it's made from the love of Madonna fans.  A great thread to unite fans.  Some of us may have our differences, but there is no doubt we all are passionate about Madonna.  Hope people continue to feed this thread with more Debut album things that I or others have missed.

And a special thanks to @Jackieand @RUADJAIfor featuring and pinning this thread.  Thank you!! :)
