Those three sixes stole this song's spot in the Top 10. ABBA was the best pop band in the 70's, everyone can agree to that. But how great was the ABBA sampling in this? The demo is boring as fuck in comparison. This spawned a legendary video, many legendary (and questionable) performances, and was insanely successful. There are only about 10 Madonna songs I can listen to all day on repeat and never get tired of. I'll tell you the full list later if you want, but this one is definitely on there. A standout and highlight of American Life, I think this captures spy movie awesomely. The video is easily one of her best, and the production is absolute slayage, with it's pounding beats and skittering synths. Who else could name check Sigmund Freud in a song? I'm a little surprised this didn't make Top 10, but I'm also glad. As great as the song is, there are many much better. This is one of Orbit's best productions, and Madonna's NRG is particularly hi here. The video is iconic, and the guitars here are awesome when paired with the blips. The second chorus (quicker than a ray of light then gone for...) is the moment where everything is tied together. I think this should've actually been the first single, THEN Frozen. Erotica's last survivor and ballad says goodbye, just shy of the Top 10. I love the production, the drums sound like thunder claps even. The synths are deep and emotional, and her voice carries a mature, heavy tone. The video is really nice, and I'm sad the latest performance we've gotten was an interlude, but I'll agree it goes here. Hung UP did it very well imo, I think it's the ABBA sample which deserved to be in the Top10! But it looks incredible Get Together is in such a higher position...

 

RAY OF LIGHT has an incredible intro, I remember when I first heard it on the day of release in the record shop (I couldn't wait to go home for listening). But I still think the chorus lacks something, M voice is very high and she can't sing it very well live...

 

RAIN did it very well, too, it is such a powerful ballad, where the electronic sounds match at best with the beautiful lyrics.

Perhaps Madonna's most self-influential track of the 80's, this is the track that gave her the credibility to tackle mature subjects and break free from synthpop, this track is legendary in it's own right. Addressing adult subjects, but still somehow feeling more cheery than not. The strings in this song help to set the tone fantastically, and the vocals and lyrics are on point and in perfect synergy with each other. Totally Top 10.
