Well, at that time Rod Stewart was quite relevant, and in 1994 there weren't been that many shows as there are now, so a successful artist performing on New Year's eve was a huge deal. In the meantime, many huge stars performed in Brazil, including Madonna, so it's not a major rarity anymore.

Madonna's show is more comparable to the free Rolling Stones gig

My only worry is not being able to see her. The MINIMUM estimate is ONE MILLION people, as was the case at the Rolling Stones concert. Furthermore, the city of Rio is experiencing a very insecure situation. I'm in doubt, why go to Rio and see Madonna on a big screen 1 kilometer away, but it's worth watching it on TV
