Done !

the key album for me. Express Yourself broadcast every night in 89 in the summer while I was on vacation at a campsite in the south of France, I was 12 and this song was for me the coolest thing I had ever heard. I kinda missed out on Like a Prayer... and it's vogue that then made me a mega fan of Madonna until death do us part and the Blond Ambition tour on TV in the next summer. Like a Prayer is the Madonna album that resembles me the most: both joyful and sad, optimistic and dark. I like his Eleonor Rigby era beatles side on Dear Jessie, the bitterness of till death do us part, the purity and beauty of Promice to try and Oh Father, the youthful freshness of Cherich ... and then with hindsight this album takes me back to the beginning of the AIDS years, the gravity after the lightness of the 80s, the end of an era the end of my childhood with the excitement of the future but also the fear, the feeling of being different that not everything will be easy and at the same time excitement and the desire to grow up quickly... and then Madonna who brings sunshine light desire for a great life like hers, desire for freedom, it is enough to look at her to listen to her and everything can become possible ... and then she is devilishly beautiful ... I am in college I am not popular ... I know it will be better tomorrow it is written somewhere on this disc and I touch with my finger a truth my truth

Express Yourself is easily a top ten Madonna song of all time for me, the album version is sooooooooooooooooooooooooo much better than the Immaculate version with the micro drum energy.

I wanted to do a strategic rate after the True Blue results but couldn't bring myself to do it.

I almost rated Express Yourself a 1 and Cherish a 0 just to make sure neither end up beating Like A Prayer for the top spot.  Those songs are great though....I couldn't do them dirty like that so I continued to vote with my heart.  sigh

I would never feel right rating tracks like that low even if for a strategic reason. You made the right call.

For this one it was hard not to give only 9.5's (sorry I am that person that won't rate a 10 easily) It really is that album for me. I remember being blown away as a kid (11) by the maturity and all that drama. EY video the most beautiful thing I had ever seen. Hearing LAP on the car radio, memories. Still listening back most of the record is as good as it was then. I understand some people's preference for the shep mixes for EY and KIT but I prefer the Steph versions tbh. I am preparing myself for a very low score for Love Song, but you are wrong y'all! ;-) I know it kind of drags along but I've always seen that as intentional as it is about a relationship that is going nowhere. But behind that there are such beautiful vocal harmonies, little rifs and motiefs. I also love it's position on the album. That A side is just perfection, starting from LAP to EY, then throwing a curveball like Love Song and end with TDDUP (major highlight for me) and PTT (which is sappy but the juxtaposition between the bitter mourning of the former and the sentimental of the latter just works) The B side is a bit more jarring, Cherish is a wonderfull opener and sparks with joy, Dear Jessie works in the lineup but hasn's aged very well. I have the same with OF, it is a great track and I wish I could love it more but there is also something that leaves me a bit meh, I guess it's the drum arrangement that is too generic and those awful guitar rifs that put me off. KIT and SE are both highlights. I even like the closing track's vibe and I just adore Supernatural

Also can we base our points on the video version of Express Yourself instead of the album version?

Reveal should be on the 6th of February, same time as last time, if everything goes well.

Since i'm also including tracks that aren't on the album itself, it's fair to rate the album tracks with the video/single versions in mind i think. You do what you think is best! :)
