We've all heard it, over and over, on every single media: Taylor Swift is the first artist to reach the billionaire landmark only thanks to her music. But is she?

First, a look at Forbes estimates of Taylor's worth :

-$500 million from royalties and touring (which is a rough estimate)
-$125 million from real estate (not music even though bought from music royalties)
-$500 from the ESTIMATED worth of her music catalog (she sold 200 million records but is also a streaming multiple records holder) - but that's an estimate, that's not in her pocket at all.

How do they know how much her music catalog is worth? Well, according to a source, they say...Taylor's PR?

That brings us to Madonna's music catalog worth. Springsteen sold his for $500 million and he sold like 150 million records. We can easily say that Madonna's catalog is worth AT LEAST the same - she sold $400 million records, her streaming numbers are fair (better than Springsteen's, right?). But when you look to Madonna's profile on Forbes.com, you see that they estimate her wealth to $580, they are not even mentioning the worth of her music catalog, which is strange (since if you look on Taylor's profile on Forbes.com, they do mention it). Does that mean that Madonna's wealth of $580 includes her music catalog's worth? We don't know. But let's do the math, if it does not, that would mean we have to add it to their estimate which would bring Madonna's fortune way beyond the billion landmark. If it does, that would mean that Madonna is only worth $80 million? Who are they kidding?

No, she nor Taylor is!  If they were, there weren't be any question of it.  Reliable sources would have facts to back up their claims.  The important thing is; Madonna knows how to manage her finances and will be well provided for until the day she dies, even if she quit entertaining all together.  She has many other investments that provide a healthy income as well.

Yes, but she also invests much of her own money on her career, she has financed her own videos, films, etc, and spends a lot of money on art too.

Guy got half a part of their assets made during their marriage, not her earnings before the marriage, reportedly he got $75 million, which is a lot, but Madonna can earn that in a year.

Donations are almost always used as a tax relief, as you said, so Madonna's philanthropy most likely doesn't have any impact on her wealth, other than paying less in taxes.

Madonna doesn't disclose her earnings made from investments, flipping properties, buying and selling art etc, so we can only have information about her earnings from touring, album sales, and other public endeavors. She has also had a few unsuccessful projects, like the Hard Candy Gyms, and the fashion line and the perfume line have also been discontinued, so she definitely didn't make a great deal of money from that (unlike some celebs who have successful perfume/clothing lines).

She is either a billionaire, or close to 1 billion.

Absolutely 

They have reported that $850 Million figure for years now, only on interests in the bank, that money already has gone into a billion.

however, we have to take into account that we don't know how extravagant M's spendings are. But she seems like she's quite rational so she's probably controlling how much she spends.
