Interestingly enough, given the song's title, it didn't chart that great in America outside of the dance chart. But abroad it was a hit.

The original version by McLean is iconic and is rooted in southern folk/rock. To me, it was an odd, off-brand choice for Madonna that makes little sense in the film it comes from.

Again - just my opinion. If you enjoy it - enjoy it.

It didn’t chart high in America because the single wasn’t released in stores. So it charted only with airplay. 
It made more sense than Into The Groove in Susan by the way.

Exactly.  Charted @ #29 on the Bilboard Hot 100, #21 on the A/C chart, #20 on the Adult top 40 Chart,  #16 Mainstream Top 40 and #1 on the Dance Charts.  

I'm sure if an actual single was released, the Hot 100 definitely would be higher.  They pulled a Beautiful Stranger move and I'm sure even  that single would have reached top 10 if not top 5 if they released a single.
