  8. Of all the covers of Madonna's albums, I prefer those that focus on her face and the emotions that Madonna wants to convey. The illusion of first love on the cover of True Blue, the unbridled eroticism and sensual ecstasy on the cover of Erotica, the spirituality and purity of the soul in Ray of Light, etc. In the case of American Life, one of my favorite albums, it is the coldness, harshness and insensitivity expressed in Madonna's gaze due to living in such a violent and bloody environment as war (and where death and suffering of the human being is an everyday thing) the emotions that I manage to distinguish. That is why I love that this was the official cover of all the alternatives that there were (like the one where she is holding a weapon) because there are no other elements that distract our attention and make us lose sight of the message that Madonna originally wants to convey.

  11. And it's more fitting, especially with American Life the song. Patty Hearst was an heir to the Hearst fortune whom was kidnapped and then shared the revolutionary far left views of her kidnappers and joined them, questioning the values of her family and the american capitalist way of life. And then she came back to an heir again...just like Madonna bought a huge house in Beverly Hills in may 2003 and made deals with Estée Lauder and Gap.

  12. It’s strange they say the Patty Hearst (who I’d never heard of) reference is “cliche” but then recommend going with a Che Guevara style headshot, isn’t that a cliche?
    3 points
  13. The 2000s looks and covers were Kylie Minogue rip-offs (cowgirl, Patty Hearst/Che Guevara, disco queen, boxer) and it came off cartoonish. I’d rather see M as M rather than a boxer or a cowgirl.

  14. The campaign is already a mess. La Isla Bonita and Burning up shouldn't being released in the middle of Ray Of Light #25, but knowing that they consider that as a blanket and a hood, I don't really care at this point. Ray of light HD video was announced and it should come at some point, but we have La Isla video uploaded 200 years ago, where u can see a pixel doing a Madonna lipsync.

  15. While I have no issue with anything you posted, but regarding this specifically, you have to keep in mind not everyone is familiar with everyone's gender. While I've vaguely heard of Christina and the Queens before hearing of Madonna's collaboration, I initially didn't know of his gender identification. When I first saw him, I wasn't sure if he was a male or a female? After looking up a few more videos, it became more clear he was a woman, transitioning to a male identity. Though, It's like going up to a woman who looks pregnant and assuming she's pregnant when she's not. If you aren't familiar with the person, you can't always identify even what could be obvious. My point is; we should refrain from barking at people for "misgendering" others when you aren't sure they just didn't have any idea. Note; I'm not saying you were intentionally being mean or barking here, but I've seen others get upset at others in the same way with others misidentifying others when some may had no idea. I hope this makes sense? My point is; we can't always assume everyone should know how others are being identified. It's so easy to assume Chris is a woman since that is how she was born and she visibly still looks like one. That said, to be clear that I'm understanding who Chris is, he seems to be more interested in being identified as "pansexual". Apparently, he's currently resisting the "trans" identity because he isn't interested in going through any operation or hormones treatment. Sounds as if he's more interested in remaining to be "binary".

    Warner VS Maverick 2004

Interesting recap, thank you! (And thanks for the general "AL" era one, too, will read that as soon as I send this post haha). Looking back it was all very messy and sad. I didn't remember all those Caresse ironic comments about it. I guess she had some influence too on the situation? After the "Music" album Madonna relationship with Warner was in an all time low - her detaching from a big project like "GHV2" was completely out of character with her previous work until then. It's almost like she wanted the album to bomb to f**k with Warner. And while it didn't, those 7 million copies would have been double with at least a new song and video. And then I guess it also affected the "American Life" album promo, even if the video debacle was the main disaster there. That said, Maverick already had a bad reputation with legal drama with artists. I remember Alanis' "Under Rug Swept" album was delayed until they reached an agreement, so I checked again and Wikipedia says this: "Production of the album was delayed when Morissette became involved in disputes with executives at Maverick Records after she testified at U.S. Government hearings against artist-unfriendly record contract practices. As she put it, she had to go through lawyers to "have a dialogue with people" and take an extended period of time to "have one little thing figured out". Because she was accustomed to having the producers on her albums act as "the buffer to the outside world" during recording, she found it a challenge to handle the situation on her own. "I was trying to be isolated enough to tap into my artistry while keeping people at bay who don't know fuck all about nurturance", she said. Eventually, it became "too much" for Morissette and she took negotiations into her own hands, which meant she had to halt her work on the album: "I had to be willing to throw the record away and not ever release it." Despite the relatively low sales of Morissette's previous two albums, Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie and MTV Unplugged (1999), compared to those of her international debut album, Jagged Little Pill (1995), Maverick Records considered her a strong commercial asset and were concerned that she would leave because of the disputes and release the album on another label. For a time Morissette was threatening to leave Maverick (according to Entertainment Weekly), until label founder Madonna intervened and persuaded her to stay." Music business...

  22. Guy Ritchie co-wrote the children books. Up until their release it was mentioned as a mutual project, Caresse Henry even said they were in the writing process when asked about it when it was just a rumour. I guess it might have been linked to the Swept Away mega flop. This is what Caresse said on madonna.com in october of 2022 when asked by a fan Edwina A. Morgan asks: I am posting you pertaining the children's books that Madonna has meant to have written. She mentioned them during an interview aired yesterday on a early morning news/entertainment program. I have not been able to find where to purchase these books, and would be grateful if you could provide a source. Caresse: These books written by Guy Ritchie and Madonna are a work in progress, please stay tuned to this site for more info. EDIT : in an interview for VH1 while promoting American Life she said he was supposed to write them with her but got caught writing scripts instead but he gave his opinion : "Madonna said that she wanted to achieve something deeper than the "vapid and vacant" books that were available for young readers. She also said the idea of writing the books was suggested to her by a Kabbalah teacher and she originally planned to co-write them with husband Guy Ritchie. In an interview for music channel VH1, to be screened in the UK on Good Friday, she criticised children's books for not containing any life lessons. Madonna said: "I have a teacher I've been studying Kabbalah with for the last almost seven years now, and he's suggested that I write some children's stories based on a lot of things that I've learned in Kabbalah - so that's what I did." She said that husband Ritchie had got caught up writing scripts so the responsibility for writing the books fell solely to her. She added: "He did stay really involved - you know, he's my greatest critic. Whenever something gave him the retarded tingles, he was not shy about letting me know."

  23. "Nothing Really Matters" was March 2 and "Live To Tell" March 26, for reference. I'd say "Nothing Really Matters" or "Drowned World/Substitute For Love". Or nothing this week xd We'll see Thursday when it's midnight already in NZ.

  25. It's not drawn on, it's an AI upscale of the original file i posted too, that's why it gives this wrong impression of being added. Check the original file in my post. I got it from the news archives of an old Madonna forum. First glimpse we got of the artwork for the single before they changed it (they removed the guns and added red stripes on her face for the final single artwork)

  26. Here it is I found it two weekd ago while looking for the Q interview from 2003. I ended up on Mad-Eyes.net archives (where i also got the bit of news about warner and the photoshoot i posted previously). Turns out it's the first pic we got from the campaign. The guns are still very mush visible but she does not have the red stripes on her face. I remember the first pics we got, all had the guns and then they removed it. The version above is an AI upscale, here is the file i used from Mad-eyes for the purists ^^

  27. Thanks for the article and for the translation! I guess the single cover would be the 1st version (Madonna request) and the final album cover the 2nd version - M/M's choice? Looking back, both are incredibly bold and way too artistic. No wonder it was never going to be a big seller mainstream project. The Karens of the world would never see those covers and think "oh, let's get Madge's new album!" - "American Life" video debacle or not. I remember also the Craig McDean drama. Weird, since anyway Madonna would be paying it back to Warner with her royalties. I guess it had to do with all the Maverick legal drama back then and they just wanted to punish her/f**k with her.

  30. From Evening Mail January 8 2004 : We still know hardly anything about Madonna's wedding with Guy Ritchie, but now at least we know she had someone write her a wedding song: "A top songwriter, who penned superstar Madonna’s wedding song, has stepped in to help his threatened old school. Rob Ellis, 25, who wrote All I Ever Needed for the pop star’s big day, is busy working on an anthem for Lowick School, near Ulverston. The new song, called Be Somebody Today, is expected to be premiered at a teacher and pupil reunion in February. Mr Ellis describes the song — which will feature Lowick pupils — as nothing like the usual charity song."

  34. The whole thing is such an ugly mess. M/M revealed prior that M saw the same cutout design they did for another campaign and asked that they do that for her. It was basically a cut and paste job right down to the red over the one eye. The album is such an eyesore.

  35. Well spatial audio is for any song, it’s a setting on your device. So the Burning Up single isn’t “in spatial audio”. But yes, I don’t like it at all. It makes sense for watching TV shows on a TV, wearing headphones not for music on headphones.

  36. Sorry, I am not sure what you are talking about? Both Like A Prayer and Express Yourself were both commercial successes. Despite the controversy behind LAP song, it was very well received. It's one of her biggest selling singles behind Vogue and Like A Virgin. The album was also very commercial and "catchy". Maybe not as pop friendly as True Blue was, but it still was the second biggest selling record in 1989. Like mentioned, in general record sales were down for everyone in '89. Most artists with big selling albums in prior years (such as Madonna) were selling abnormally high volumes back then because in the mid 80's there was a huge economic boom, especially in the U.S. The music and video business was at its ultimate peak at the time. Very few have sold that many album in such a short amount of time, then those artists did in the mid 80's. By '89, we were seeing a decline in the economy and the music business.

  47. Because Madonna was not a priority prior to Borderline's success, i guess they were not interest in these pics nor they knew they existed. I think it's George Holtz (first album/Borderline single/Interview magazine photographer) who said that Warner asked him to take pics in early 1984 because they had no photos to promote her. She had a lot of pics taken for european publications. It feels like a bad curse when you think about it because wether it's the Corman's polaroids, the Japan session or the Bordeline session, they are the ones that captured her raw sexuality and sex appeal the best. She looks the most beautiful in them out of all the pics from that era until she met Herb Ritts.
