  1. As a fan since the very start, I will put it like this. Madonna starting trending and becoming popular with young people from the release of her first album with hits like Holiday and Borderline but I always felt that one of the most defining moments of her career was Like a Virgin live on MTV, it is really difficult to understand the effect that moment and that album as a whole had on her career unless you were there to see it. She was elevated from a popular upstart into a full blown superstar. Some people kidded themselves and said that she was still a passing fad who would fade into obscurity, they massively underestimated her relentless marketing skills and ambition, from Like a Virgin on, her domination was utterly complete and would remain so during the rest of the decade, you could take Cyndi Lauper's success in the 80's and multiply it by 20 and she would not even come close to competing with Madonna's success, they started off as rivals but Like a Virgin resulted in Madonna eclipsing all her female rivals and never looking back. If Madonna became a superstar with like a Virgin, it was her first and possibly most shocking reinvention True Blue that turned her from superstar into something beyond superstar. True Blue was very important because it marked the moment that Madonna had accumulated a worrying level of power and from then on the media would try and fail to destroy the monster they had created. It also highlighted the fact that she was a talented songwriter and could be successful without the image Madonna wannabe's were copying. Self titled was the moment Madonna became popular, Like a Virgin was the moment she became a superstar and True Blue was when she became an iconic legend. Michael Jackson was her only rival in the 80's in terms of sales although Prince was unquestionably the most musically talented of the three 80's mega stars.

  2. For goodness sake, please let it go with the "deluded fake fans" narrative around Inside the Groove, its insulting and silly. And a viewpoint of Like a Virgin underperforming is simply not the case ... which anyone who lived through the era as it unfolded could tell you. It basically brought her name to the masses! I don't normally respond to posts in this way, but seeing sh*t constantly flung at someone who is doing such an honest and respectful podcast (rather than just saying you dont like it, which is fine) is beyond tiresome and feels like a personal vendetta against the guy. Please. Let it go.

  3. We don't realize what Madonna is doing here because some fans just want her to be popular (to be popular through her). This made her trend on Twitter and, for once, in her favour. Because she's always so extreme and sometimes messy and absolutely never subtle in the way she expresses herself that the first reaction is cringe and be against her but she's starting to create a conversation on agism. You don't change things by asking and saying please while you stay in your safe lane. I was surprised to see Whoopi Goldberg and The View women defending her. She's putting herself on the line here and even though the road is long (look at the misogynistic comments her own fans, or rather supposed fans, make about her) she may succeed to achieve her goal. I love her because she's not scared to be judged, dragged and humiliated because of what she is and that is something most people are afraid of. Edit : and i don't think she's saying to women that they should dress like her. Again, she's being extreme to make her point (like she always did in fact) and the point is dress and act the way you want, it's your life and your body and that we shouldn't live our lives to please others and not do things because we're afraid of what others might say. And that's something she's been saying (but mostly more by leading by example) since day one. She's not saying "be exactly like me" but "don't be afraid to be exactly who you are".

  5. 1985 - no doubt it was that year that made her a mega star. Everything before that was fame and popularity and stuff but 1985 put her in the upper echelon. Everything after that made her untouchable

  6. Really good! Frozen, the original version is at 7 now, so Into the groove left the list!

  8. Like a Virgin. But a lot of people didn’t think it would last so I would say True Blue really cemented her status.

  10. But the whole "If Madonna Calls" remix thing was later, right? 1996. I think Junior simply wasn't asked to remix "Take A Bow" or just didn't see it. He remixed "Bedtime Story" next, so... Coming back to the new remix of "Frozen": 1.191.378 streams on Spotify on its first week and now officially on Madonna's Spotify Top 10. It's really good.

  12. I’ve been a fan since 1987 and she was already a superstar even then - I live in the U.K. and i remember her having 8 singles in the charts in 1985 which I think at the time was a record plus live aid and the whole penthouse scandal so I would say 1985 too but I wasn’t a fan nor even a fan of music then - it was family who introduced me to music - the true blue era is my favourite in terms of music , videos , artwork and of course the magnificent wtg tour and I’m going to get shot down for this but I just love the who’s that girl movie too - it was my first cinema experience and I remember being given a badge and press pack which sadly I don’t have any more . I agree with other comments that the blond ambition tour elevated her to icon status and put her in the same league as my 2 other favourite icons MJ and Prince- an era that she will never sadly replicate again ?

  13. Yeah 85 was when the music took off, but also the myth and the legend really started being built. LAV both album and single hit #1, Material Girl #2, CFY another #1 Angel and Dress You Up in the top 5 and ITG never released but might as well have been another #1. The huge success of Desperately Seeking Susan, dating and marrying Sean Penn, the playboy/penthouse scandal, the Virgin Tour and Live AID. It was non stop all year. This was the year every newspaper, tv show and magazine was talking about M non stop and the paps started stalking her and even flew over her wedding. The obssession had begun. True Blue hitting big just cemented it and LAP gave her the critical approval that had been begrudging before that. 1989 was when music critics started taking her seriously. Yeah 1990 was another massive year, another 1985 and it too just shot her into the strasophere for sure.

  14. Much better response than that first post, which just came across as pity party. Good on Madonna for calling 50 cent's bullshit out and turning him into 1 cent.

  17. Hi everyone ! Since we'll soon be celebrating the 40th anniversary of Madonna's career (!!), and due to popular demand, I'll organize a megarate for every single Madonna album. Let's start where it all began, the first album, released in 1983. As requested by most users who participated to the last game, non-album tracks from the same era will also be included. Rules: - Make sure to know all the songs included in the competition. - Rate each song from 1 to 10. You are allowed to give the same rate to multiple songs. - Decimals are allowed only up to the hundredth (HIGHLY RECOMMENDED WHEN YOU CAN IN ORDER TO AVOID TIES). - You are allowed to give one 0 and one 11 (OPTIONAL). - Send your rates to me by personal messenger before December 15th, NOT in the thread. Results: #1 - 8,73 - Borderline #2 - 8,48 - Burning Up #3 - 8,34 - Holiday #4 - 8,13 - Lucky Star #5 - 7,90 - Physical Attraction #6 - 7,38 - Everybody #7 - 6,53 - Think of Me #8 - 6,08 - I Know It #9 - 5,72 - Ain't No Big Deal Good luck to everyone !

  22. This new narrative of Madonna being a VICTIM painted by her so called "fans" is strange and kinda upsetting. It's funny how M fans dragged and criticized what Gaga and fans did, are now doing the same exact thing.

  23. She has always used sex as a medium to sell and market. That is what her career is built on. That is the reason why there are Madonna studies and courses in universities. When Madonna exposed her belly button for the first album photoshoot and lucky star video, she knew what she was doing. Let's not re-write history people!

  25. No it doesn’t. The point is it doesn’t matter how you look. No one has the right to bully you for how you look especially when it’s someone you know personally and invite into your world. The filter makes it more entertaining than if she just used a video of how she looks in real life.

  27. I am a fan since 1989 but I knew her since the release of "Burning Up". In my humble opinion Madonna became a superstar in 1984 -1985 during the "Like A Virgin" era (MTV, singles, movies...). 1990 is the peak of her career but she was everywhere (on the news, radio, TV) during 1984-1987.

  28. Cade & Cassie???? well maybe they spoke to M but it was MADONNAS LAWYER $$$$$$$$$$$$$ and Madonna even posted 'were coming to get you' I doubt Cassie would know him or have the funds. Not arguing though. Who knows? Well find out one day. I dont really mind. Britneys happiness is whats important.

  31. It was not live and was edited and it does include shots from Japan. They had a ton of performers that night performing "live via satellite" from their respective concerts. M wasn't the only one. The actual MTV awards from 1987 is out there so you can see for yourself if you track it down. In terms of the music video, interestingly it never seemed to be added to MTV's rotation list in 1987. I get the feeling it was only used internationally and not in the US. Billboard listed video lists from all the different music video shows and it never appeared on any list. Maybe it was played on MTV, but more so in a recurrent manner not like a video would normally play.

  32. I heard M's Santa Baby in a deli the other day, made me smile. It's that time of year when it becomes her top streaming/popular song on Amazon Music. If she had other holiday songs (besides Holiday of course) they'd be up there too. A missed opportunity.

  33. That doesn't confirm anything. It was an idea, that never went into production. Yeah, she verbalized it. But at the end of the day, It never was officially announced.

  37. I can’t dislike a photo?? I don’t like photoshopped faces and don’t like young girls being obsessed with just their body and sex. What’s wrong with that? if Lola’s generation like the porn-whore aesthetic, so what? Go ahead. I just don’t think it’s cool or smart…not sure what my crime is. Speaking the truth perhaps? *sigh*

  42. This is always true for me, we know the social media trends causing real mental damage to people for profit and Insta fake is only trailing nazi recruitment on FB slightly. I get the Madonna as all wise all the time desire from some but reality is she is also an insecure narcissist with too many people around her blowing smoke up her arse like Klein with these repetitive photoshoots and vague rebellions. Love her to bits but playing victim to negative comments on social media is a fools game
